Many of us hold an idyllic vision of Vermont – a state synonymous with nature, tranquility, and community. But recent years have shattered this perception, revealing a surge in retail theft that rivals or exceeds rates in more urbanized regions. An eye-opening article from the Burlington Free Press recently highlights a staggering increase in retail theft, with incidents more than doubling in just one year. This surge is not just a retail issue but a community-wide challenge intertwined with systemic problems such as the drug crisis, reduced police force, and housing issues. Retailers in one shopping square are reporting losses of over a thousand dollars per day, while local businesses are seeing their tip jars swiped and stores vandalized. Burlington's police force is already operating with limited resources and prioritizing the most critical emergencies. Retail theft is often categorized as a lower priority, meaning immediate responses are rare. Despite the increase in theft, Burlington's businesses are standing strong, calling for community support and collaboration. Their message is clear: frequent local stores, support your neighbors, and help create a safer, more vibrant downtown. Let's challenge preconceptions that any area can be immune to the plague of rampant retail theft!

Will the Retail Theft Era Ever Come to an End? In the last few years, cities across the nation have been sharing reports of retail crime in all sorts of shapes and sizes, ranging from flash mobs in broad daylight to organized retail crime rings. How do trends in retail theft across different cities reflect broader socio-economic conditions, and what implications might this have for retailers’ strategies? Read the article & panel discussion here: https://lnkd.in/ejWiPSxH David Biernbaum "Retail theft is a law enforcement issue. There are too many lame excuses for crimes in our country today, and too few crimes are punished appropriately, and especially retail crimes." Lisa Goller, MBA "Locking up merchandise pushes shoppers online and they may wind up choosing a rival’s e-commerce site instead." Neil Saunders "Theft has been around since the beginning of time: stallholders in ancient Rome had problems with urchins stealing things from them."

Transforming B2B marketing from Boring 2 Brilliant to Drive business Growth l ReThink Retail Global Top Influencers 2022 + 2023
I do not know which is more sad... elderly folk making a dash for it, or begging for mercy after committing shop theft. Either way, the numbers don't lie - there are more shop theft cases in the first 4 months of the year Closed circuit television (CCTV) works as a great deterrent in Singapore precisely for the reason that the police mentioned. Singapore is small and you will be nabbed eventually. The same narrative will not work in other countries. It becomes an "after-the-fact" device only to review what happened. However, there are many other things you can do as a retailer to better guard against shop theft: - trained staff to detect suspicious customers - having more staff (increases deterrence) - having better lighting - better store design eg. layouts to avoid blind spots - visible signages about (hidden) cameras; whether you have them installed can be an entirely different matter - item tagging with Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) or other anti-shoptheft devices - keeping highly sought after items locked (not advisable as Impulse buying is curbed) - in-store detective disguised as a shopper Anyone has any other ideas to combat shop theft? #retail #shoptheft #shoplifting #physicalretailisnotdead https://lnkd.in/gBgQw_mg

Inventory Management: Implement inventory control measures such as regular audits and electronic tagging to track merchandise. Public Awareness: Use signs or announcements to remind customers of security measures in place and consequences of theft. Running a convenience store is like navigating a real-life obstacle course where the hurdles include shoplifting, potential armed robberies, and the ever-elusive quest for spill-free floors. Invest in a surveillance system that could spot a fly plotting mischief, with high-resolution cameras strategically positioned like undercover agents. Add some Hollywood-worthy lighting to expose shady characters, and throw in 24/7 remote monitoring because, let's be real, criminals don't adhere to a 9-to-5 schedule. It's a security setup so tight, even the thought of shoplifting might trigger an alarm. Bonus: visible signage doubles as a confidence booster, making your customers feel as safe as a cat in a sunbeam. And if you're serious about cash, conduct daily audits as if you're guarding the King's treasury. Keep your cash secure, deposit regularly, and watch as your store becomes less appealing to robbers – no beach vacations funded by the register money allowed. #conveniencestores #security #videosurveillance #alarmsystem https://lnkd.in/g4F8un4m
