To franchise or not to franchise ... Franchising can be an effective way of growing your business. It is, however, not without it’s pitfalls and technical requirements. In particular, protecting your IP and clients as the owner of a franchise can be very tricky. You also need to be very sure that you have something to franchise – a “secret sauce”. The clearer you are on your franchise product or system, the stronger your franchise will be. Putting a franchise together is not only a legal exercise but an accounting one too. You need to be sure that you’ve crunched your numbers and that you know what your margins are. #MoneyMonday Should I consider buying a franchise? Yep. Particularly if you haven’t run a business before. Here’s why. 1. It’s a proven business model. You get access to a business model that’s been proven, tried and tested. 2. They’ll train you. They’ll train you in how to run the business. They’ll teach you in each aspect of the franchise. 3. They’ll support you. You’re not on your own. The franchisor is there to assist and support you. They’ve “been there, done that”, so they’ll be able to help. 4. Leverage the brand. Building your own brand is hard work. You can leverage off the marketing they’ve already put in place, which will save you a massive amount of time and cost. 5. Peer support. Your fellow franchise partners will also provide great support. They’re in there working every day, just like you. Reach out and engage with your group, it’s a two way thing. 🌅 THE SUN SETS on another coaching observation and unfortunately, this time it’s a ‘’not yet’’. The final stage of our discovery process offers prospective franchisees the chance to attend a session a take part in a coaching observation. Having progressed to this stage, they are often a strong candidate for the franchise and as such we grant many franchises at the side of the pitch. But tonight, we weren’t able to move ahead with the franchise. We never say ‘’no’’ as by this time we have progressed the application to the final stage and the prospect has impressed along the way. But if the coaching standards are not yet met and there is work to be done, we say ‘’not yet’’ and offer a development plan. This often involves working alongside existing franchisees to upskill and prepare to return for another observation. Many of our top performing franchisees were once told ‘’not yet’’ and it’s a good test of whether they really want the opportunity. Of course we hope to be able to proceed, but we have to do what’s right for the brand and the individual involved as we aim to set both the business and person up for success. What's really nice about franchising is you can find a business that can be a great fit for you with a budget that's also a great fit for you. There's no automatic correlation between what a franchise business costs and the profits that it can earn. It all goes back to your activity in running that business and how you plan to grow that business. Every franchisor has to tell you what their cost of entry is and spell out the total initial investment. They have to disclose it to you in the Franchise Disclosure Document in Items 5, 6 and 7. Items 5 tells you the franchise fee and all fees paid to the franchisor prior to opening. Item 6 tells you about the royalties you will pay and other ongoing fees you may be paying to the franchisor and its affiliates. Item 7 spells out everything it takes to get into the business up and running by cost category and ranges of investment per category.
