Hospice Care Week (7th - 13th October) The Kirkwood, now cares and supports over 2,000 local people each year across Kirklees. Kirkwood Hospice evolved after a man called David Stocks read a review in The Huddersfield Examiner about a TV programme called 'Going Gently'? The BBC 2 play featured two men dying alone of terminal illnesses and David, having seen his own father die at home from cancer, was moved enough to write a letter to the paper suggesting a facility should be set up in the town. The responses to the letter ended with a meeting, which raised the grand total of £4.50, after the small group pledged 50p each to launch the Huddersfield Hospice Appeal. After 3 months that total had risen to £10,000. Kirkwood Hospice opened its doors in March 1987 after the Huddersfield appeal combined with the Dewsbury Hospice Appeal in 1983 to help provide one hospice for the whole of Kirklees. Although many things have changed over the decades, across the country the demand for care, via Hospices, increases and a large part of funding, Hospices need, they have to raise themselves. Only due to the goodwill of the community, does this vital care take place. There are different ways you can support The Kirkwood, as a business, including: Support us through volunteering, we have a variety of activities you and your teams can get involved in. Fundraising, this could be from hosting a "cuppa for kirkwood", taking part in one of our campaigns or events or even jumping out of a plane! www.thekirkwood.org.uk has upcoming events/campaigns. Dedicate a member of your team as a "support life champion" - this is a free to your business, but has many benefits as part of a business wellbeing toolkit. Join The Kirkwood Business Movement - membership costs just 85p a day and with over 70 business members, offers great opportunities. Help us make a difference at local level, get in touch and lets explore some of these. #hospicecareweek24 #supportlocal #kirkwoodbusinessmovement #volunteering

There are certain things that seem to catch people's attention - and our Hoppiness Project is one of those! I was unbelievably proud to see it in The Guardian at the weekend, and seeing the likes ramp up. At time of writing we are on over 18,000. I also got kudos from my daughters for it making tick tock! At Alive, we like to do things differently. We try to push the boundaries and we like to use creativity in all forms to reach older people and help to enrich their lives. The Hoppiness Project does just that. We are using beer to connect with older people. The project works with care homes to plant and harvest hops, then visit a brewery, allow their hops to be part of a collective and then sample the produce once it's brewed. The regular sessions do look at culture, memories are shared and stories are told, photos are brought out. It really is a way of enabling people to be part of a community, achieve something and share part of themselves - and just have a good time! I found the comments on the Guardian's social media really interesting. Most were incredibly positive, thanking us for doing this, for bringing joy and purpose to the lives of the residents and inspiring others to do similar things. But of course, as is with social media, there were many negative ones. Why should the thought of older people drinking a glass of beer be "shocking"? It's important as a society that we discuss issues like this. When older people do find themselves in care, they can lose agency and choice. Why shouldn't they have a beer or a glass of wine if they enjoy it? Why shouldn't they be taken to the pub for lunch? Yes, for some, medication and alcohol aren't a good mix, but the care home manages this with them, and they know their residents well. As a society, we can infantilise older people, especially once they are in care. But we need to remember these were people who have had lives and experiences. Why should they be deprived of the things they enjoy when they need to be cared for? By running projects like Hoppiness, we can hopefully encourage this debate. It will help people to understand the needs of older people that little bit more and the need for older people to continue to have joy. As Guy said "we aren't getting people legless but hoping to change the narrative around what people in care homes can do and celebrate them." I say cheers to that! 🍺 #beer #hoppiness #carehomes #dementia #lightinguplaterlife https://lnkd.in/esPmpPdH

Movember is a global movement dedicated to raising awareness and funds for men’s health issues, including mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. By growing a moustache or setting personal goals, we aim to spark conversations and make a lasting impact on men’s lives. Five Things Men Should Know and Do When It Comes to Their Health: - Spend Time with People Who Make You Feel Good: Surround yourself with positive influences. Social connections and supportive relationships play a critical role in mental well-being. Engaging with friends, family, or community groups can reduce stress levels and contribute to a happier and healthier life. Take time to nurture these relationships and make social interactions a priority. - Talk More: Open conversation is essential. Whether it's talking about challenges, sharing feelings, or seeking advice, communication can prevent small issues from becoming overwhelming. Remember, it's okay to ask for help—speaking to a friend, a family member, or a professional can make a significant difference in processing emotions and navigating life's obstacles. - Know the Numbers: Be aware of key health metrics, including blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and body mass index (BMI). Understanding these numbers can give insight into your overall health and flag potential issues early. At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it is right for you to have a PSA test. Regular check-ups are a vital part of monitoring these indicators and taking necessary action where required. - Know the Nuts: Men's health includes awareness about testicular health. Regular self-examinations can help you become familiar with your body and notice any unusual changes early on. If you detect anything out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional. Early detection is key in effectively addressing testicular issues. - Move, More: Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Regular exercise doesn’t just benefit your physical health; it also has a profound impact on mental well-being. Whether it’s walking, cycling, swimming, or playing a sport, find something enjoyable that motivates you to move. Aim for a mix of activities that elevate your heart rate and strengthen muscles. Your support in our fundraising space could make a real difference. Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to improving men’s health worldwide. Join us in making a change this Movember – let’s support the cause together! https://lnkd.in/ge8bv3p9

An amazing event supporting The SUDC Foundation. Register for Huddy’s Hike on the link below. The SUDC Foundation is the only organization worldwide whose purpose is to raise awareness, fund research, and serve those affected by sudden unexplained death in childhood (SUDC). The SUDC Foundation provides all services at no cost to the people it serves. SUDC is a category of death in children between the ages of 1 and 18 that remains unexplained after a thorough investigation, including an autopsy. At this time, we do not know what causes SUDC, how to predict it, or how to prevent it. https://lnkd.in/gphA-Y3G

On November 30th, I’ll be running 30km alongside some incredible friends as part of the [Mo]re than a Run initiative for Mo-vember. We've chosen to do 30km for the 30% rise in the number of Australian men dying by suicide over the last decade - an alarming figure to hear. I recently had someone ask why, as a female, I am partaking in Mo-vember initatives. Whilst I don't think this is a silly question, I have a few reasons I believe females have a crucial role to play in raising awareness and supporting Men's physical and mental health initiatives: 1. Support and advocacy. whether you’re a friend, sister, daughter or partner, we play a crucial role in the lives of men. By advocating for their mental health, we help to create an environment where they feel safe discussing their feelings 2. Breaking stigmas: engaging with Movember helps to break the stigma and encourage open conversations around mental health which can affect anyone 3. Role models. Our participation may inspire someone else to participate, contributing to positive change 4. Comprehensive solutions: understanding the intersection of men’s vs women’s mental health can lead to more comprehensive solutions for everyone Over the past couple years, I've definitely witnessed a few males in my life struggle to come to terms with and accept some of their mental health struggles. Whilst we have come a long way, there's still so much we need to do to open the floor for more open and honest conversations for the men in our lives. If you'd like to donate any amount of money to support our crew, I'd be forever grateful, link below: https://lnkd.in/eZSDxZuU

As we welcome a new year, we’re looking ahead to 2025 and our strategic pledge to be here for 50% more people by 2027. 🧡 No-one should have to face terminal illness alone. No-one should have to struggle with their mental health without the help they need. But today, across the UK and right here in our community, too many people are. That’s not right and it’s not fair. As your local hospice care and emotional wellbeing charity, we and our family of services are here to make sure everyone gets the right support, at the right time, in the right place. As you may be aware, the hospice sector is facing challenging financial pressures, but we remain committed to meeting these aspirations for those we serve. QUESTION FOR YOU PLEASE I am doing the absolutely unthinkable and taking a HUGE LEAP next year and PUTTING UP MY VERY OWN CONFERENCE. (After being a keynote and guest speaker for 15 years, I will see if my new content and concept will stick.) I am not terrified at all. 😱 (just kidding, shaking like a leaf as I am typing this) The goal of the conference is to bring people together from various service provider sectors (First responders, Social Workers, Youth Workers, Therapists, etc) as well as members of the public and talk about UNHEALED and UNRESOLVED TRAUMAS and start Revolutionizing the way we support individuals who have been stuck in a vicious cycle due to trauma. (which is approximately 70% of the clients we work with) THE SHIFT will be a two-day conference, probably somewhere beautiful in Ontario. I am inviting two Celebrity guests who will share their trauma-healing stories. I want to do that because I firmly believe that trauma is not a competition; it affects anyone from all walks of life, and some have incredible tales of Healing to share. Potentially in Jun 2025. And for approximately 400 people plus the online audience. We are in the early stages of organizing and securing a professional fundraiser, organizing an event planning team, etc. SOOOOO, THE QUESTION IS: I got so much love and support from you guys over the years, and I tried not to ask for donations unless it was for victims, BUT I was wondering, if and when the time comes, would you or your organization, company, or agency be interested in SPONSORING this event? We are looking for ten sponsors for a (small amount of money) instead of a Platinum or a Gold sponsor. We will also have a recorded version that can be purchased after the conference for a lower rate. If you think your company or agency would be interested in sponsoring the event, please send me a private message so our Fundraiser coordinator can follow up. If you think your company or agency would be interested in sending people to the conference, please leave a comment. If you would be interested in attending the event yourself, please leave a comment or send me a private message if you are not comfortable commenting publicly. THANK YOU so much in advance. REALLY APPRECIATE your feedback! #unhealedtrauma #howtohealtrauma #newmethod #healing #sciencebasedhealing #Nationalconference
