A canton in a flag is a rectangular area, usually at the top hoist corner of a flag, occupying up to a quarter of the flag's area. The canton of a flag may be a flag in its own right. For instance, British ensigns have the Union Jack as their canton, as do their derivatives such as the national flags of Australia and New Zealand. Following the practice of British ensigns, a canton sometimes contains a symbol of national unity, such as the blue field and 50 white stars of the American flag. In these cases, the canton may be called simply the union. The American flag's canton derives from Britain's use of the Union Jack in the flags of its possessions including, historically, the Thirteen American Colonies. Subsequently, many New World nations along with other later countries and regions, such as Chile, Liberia, and Malaysia that were inspired by the United States adopted flag elements that were inspired by the American flag. As a result, many extant uses of a prominent canton derive either from British territorial history, or American influence and inspiration. Suka Komentari Kirim Bagikan

The American ‘Highway to Horror’ identified in the Bahamas. Fourteen (14) "American slavers ships' wrecked are identified in the Bahamian waters. The wrecks have been identified during research by the Bahamas Lost Ships Project, managed by Allen Exploration, founded by Carl Allen, a philanthropist and explorer with two passions – the Bahamas and its sunken past. The project is compiling an inventory of every shipwreck in the Bahamas. Through historical sources, it has identified 596 wrecks in the Greater Abaco region, dating from 1657 onwards, when these sea lanes began to witness substantial maritime traffic. "Shipwrecked Echoes of the Caribbean Plantation Economy, describes the wrecks of slaver ships as “silent witnesses to a period of history that the world would rather forget, but that must be respected to bear witness to the horrors and memories of the colonial past”." "These ships, which date from between 1704 and 1887, were primarily American-flagged and profited from Cuba’s sugar and coffee plantations, where enslaved Africans faced a life of cruelty." https://lnkd.in/gnTPHqGj Book Launch Date & Full Episode August 6, 2024 Mike's story is so impactful. We must never forget stories like these that have such historical significance and tell them through our lens. (perspective) My conversation with Mike Africa Jr. covered various topics related to Mike's book and the MOVE organization. We discuss Mike's inspiration for writing the book, the history of MOVE, the bombing of MOVE's house, and the aftermath. The conversation also touches on the importance of telling one's own story, the impact of the bombing on Mike's life, and the lack of accountability for those responsible. The main themes include the power of personal storytelling, the fight for justice, and the need for systemic change. The conversation explores themes of police brutality, the impact of MOVE, the POWER OF LOVE, resilience, and the importance of telling one's own story. Before police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood on May 13, 1985, few people outside Philadelphia were aware that a Black-led civil liberties organization had taken root there. Founded in 1972 by a charismatic ideologue called John Africa, MOVE's mission was to protect all forms of life from systemic oppression. They drew their ideology from the Black Panther Party and pre-dated animal and environmental rights groups like PETA and Earth First. MOVE emerged in an era when Black Philadelphians suffered under devastating policies brought by the long, doomed war in Vietnam, Mayor Frank Rizzo's overtly racist police surveillance, and, eventually, President Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs. MOVE members lived together in a collection of West Philadelphia row houses and took the surname Africa out of admiration for the group's founder. Overview Puerto Rico is a Spanish-speaking territory of the United States with a history shaped by conquest and resistance. For centuries, Puerto Ricans have crafted and negotiated complex ideas about nationhood. Jorell Meléndez-Badillo provides a new history of Puerto Rico that gives voice to the archipelago’s people while offering a lens through which to understand the political, economic, and social challenges confronting them today. In this masterful work of scholarship, Meléndez-Badillo sheds light on the vibrant cultures of the archipelago in the centuries before the arrival of Columbus and captures the full sweep of Puerto Rico’s turbulent history in the centuries that followed, from the first indigenous insurrection against colonial rule in 1511—led by the powerful chieftain Agüeybaná II—to the establishment of the Commonwealth in 1952. He deftly portrays the contemporary period and the intertwined though unequal histories of the archipelago and the continental United States. Puerto Rico is an engaging, sometimes personal, and consistently surprising history of colonialism, revolt, and the creation of a national identity, offering new perspectives not only on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean but on the United States and the Atlantic world more broadly.
