Professor of Education, Research Chair: Skills Development, Centre for Researching Education and Labour, Wits University
Thoroughly enjoyed this conference, thanks Lazaro! Our paper (The Centre for Researching Education and Labour (REAL), Wits University) looked at recognition of skills and qualifications in the Southern African region; we had an interesting session with a paper looking at the effects of migration on skill formation in Kosovo, with Linda Wanklin and Jehona Serhati, and migrants and VET in the UK with Andrea Laczik. What roles VET can and can't play in supporting migrants, but equally importantly from the perspective of us in the South, how the migration of skilled workers affects our economies and skill formation systems, is going to be an increasingly important issue.
The 9th Stockholm International Conference of Research on Vocational Education and Training just concluded! We meet researchers representing VET systems from 25 countries who presented research findings and networked. Particularly encouraging to have so many young researchers presenting concluded PhD works or theses in progress! Thanks to all for the contributions! Looking forward to our 10th conference in May 2026!

What if the scientific and pedagogic trajectories of universities were the emergent properties of evolutionary micro-dynamics ? If so, how would the nature and direction of State fundings affect these trajectories ? An attempted answer in our paper in progress together with Andrea Borsato and Valentina Erasmo to be presented today at the 65th Annual Conference of the Italian Economic Association, in Urbino

Between 16 and 18 April, nearly a thousand public management researchers gathered in Tampere, Finland, for the IRSPM Conference entitled "Hybrid futures for public governance and management". In panel 05 - Public Governance Paradigms and Good Governance in Napoleonic Administrative Tradition Countries, the results of 11 research studies were presented, and institutional arrangements for good governance in countries with similar cultural traits were discussed with enthusiasm and theoretical elevation. Many thanks to the conference organisers and fellow panellists. In times of uncertainty, it is comforting to know that there are many of us who want to contribute to building more robust, sustainable, just and happy societies.

Just wrapped up a fantastic European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) course on EU Decision-Making! 🌱 It was an enriching experience, and I’d like to thank all the lecturers, organizers, and fellow participants. Here are my 3 highlights from the course: 1️⃣ Case Studies: A fresh look guided by Christoph Klika at my favorite #GovernanceRegulation (2018/1999) and the background of its negotiations gave me a better insight not only into the provisions but also the whole policy-making process. 💡 2️⃣ Navigating EU Documents: The EU document landscape is complex, but with some tips and tools, you can usually find your way through it and navigate this maze effectively. 🗺️ 3️⃣ Various Perspectives: The course was an excellent opportunity to connect with professionals working on diverse policy areas. The questions raised during the sessions highlighted the various ways we will apply the knowledge gained. 📚✔️ It was a great pleasure to meet everyone and I hope to stay in touch! 👋🏼
We are happy to see such a big group gather in Maastricht (NL) this week to join our course "Understanding EU Decision-Making: Principles, Procedures, Practice". We hope to welcome you again soon! From an equity-centered perspective David and I elevate our previous work with Jill, Hal, Deborah, and Merita, by exploring the dynamic interconnections between and among individual thriving, collective thriving, and robust equity. We believed that the original text was a steppingstone for what we have now created by widely opening the door to the research and future focus on four critical areas for advancement. Please take a few minutes to read my thoughts on the paper and in the coming weeks dig into the full resource. I would love feedback on your overall impressions, suggestions, and insights. https://bit.ly/EqCePer
Karen J. Pittman's Remix Round Up shares her latest writing collaboration in her role as an American Institutes for Research (AIR) Scholar, part of AIR’s Equity Initiative. She and David Osher, AIR’s Vice President & Institute Fellow, expand on the ideas that were originally introduced in Thriving, Robust Equity, and Transformative Learning & Development (published in 2020). In their new paper, Equity-Centered Thriving, they open the door to new thinking, research, and practice centered on Robust Equity.
