What a week to take leave... there's so much going on! First, the launch of our new Gen 6 AI System - two years of massive innovations to talk about. Plenty more posts on the details of that coming, I assure you. Then, while I was on leave and getting absorbed in Tim Flannery's landmark book "The Weather Makers" from 2005 (feeling somewhat overwhelmed - checking for updates to graphs like the Keeling Curve for CO2 was sobering), Milton appeared. Front page news articles were appearing from the other side of the planet (Florida) as Hurricane Milton started to brew hot on the heels of Helene. But I'm lucky - I work at a Nearmap, where our core business involves helping in these events. Agency is the best panacea when facing overwhelming challenges. With a rapid post catastrophe imagery and AI system in rock solid production for well over a year, we've seen data flowing in from Milton at a huge rate already. The challenge now is less on basic logistics and ops - that is working well for capture, imagery, and AI. It's about tuning and improving usability of the data for customers, making sure it gets to them via the right mechanisms, and constantly pushing the limits on timing. After some round the clock hacking with Brett Tully, we'd hit our own APIs to rip down a constantly growing data set of (at time of post) over 900 thousand buildings with damage classification assigned for Hurricane Milton related flights - and another for all the Gen 6 damage layers. It's amazing what you can fit in a single geoparquet file! I won't share breakdown numbers of damage categories for the evolving data set at this point (destroyed, major, minor, affected, no damage), but I have it at my fingertips, and it makes for grim viewing. It's a nuanced problem where definitions matter a lot, and I don't want to add any confusion to an already complex picture by doing a hasty job of it (do you count sheds and secondary buildings? Rural? Commercial? Residential? etc.). This analysis is not a drill - a number of large customers are using them already help plan their response respond, so it's about supporting them rather than writing a blog analysis post at this point. I'm currently looking at zoomable a map in QGIS with all the imagery and AI, like the screenshot in the post below. The first data was already flowing in more than 12 hours ago, and grew massively overnight. We've also got the full Gen 6 data sets starting to roll in, with >130 AI Layers detecting things like "temporary roof repair" (tarpaulins), or specific damage types like "exposed decking" highlighting the areas where shingles have been ripped off the roofs. So I'm tired, a bit shell shocked by the scale of the event, but at least content that I have the privilege of being able to help even a little, despite sitting on the other side of the globe. Planet Earth is as fragile as it is remarkable, and both our existence and the urban habitats we build are bound inextricably to it.
In addition to post-event imagery for #HurricaneMilton, we are also applying #ComputerVision to classify and detect damages. These #AI insights in the Nearmap ImpactResponse System empower insurance claims teams to prioritize resources for severely damaged properties and accelerate claims processing. 🦺It's time to wrap up CVSA's Operation Safe Driver Week with the Motive State of Safety Report. ICYMI we surveyed over 1,100 business to understand how fleets think about safety and what they’re doing to improve it. The data doesn't lie: the most impactful road safety improvements are being driven by AI. For the fleets that use dash cams as a part of their safety program, the bottom-line results add up fast. When asked what benefits their businesses experienced after implementing dash cams, those surveyed listed visibility into driver performance (57%), fewer unsafe driving behaviors (54%), insurance savings (45%), and fewer accidents (43%) as the top four outcomes. See what other insights we uncovered in Motive's State of Safety Report: https://ow.ly/b5kJ30sF28V
