Really wonderful to see a story about the bike bus. I've been following the Bike Buss progress for a long time. The project is very impressive and it is good to see the focus be on children, which is how the Netherlands originally gained so much public support for building comprehensive cycling paths. That said, I cringe a little bit from the "gee-willikers-ain't-this-real-town-America" Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt approach, with lots of puns about kids "starting their day on the right foot"; "cranking up the fun"; and "inspiring a whole new generation of cyclists by putting a fresh spin on the morning commute". Is it too much to ask for reporters to be just a little more incisive and not dish out the typical morning TV catnip? I don't need to see kids protesting in die-ins (although that would probably be very effective so yes that's what I would LIKE to see), but I would like to see more stories about the bike bus go deeper. Maybe ask the kids themselves to explain why only 11% of kids cycle to school: "Because it's dangerous and scary to ride on streets with cars". It's good to try and win the hearts of parents with stories like these, but I want to see built infrastructure and real regulations that protect children on bikes - and I don't care if we have to shame adults into getting it done. I want adults to truly understand that the choices their municipality makes every year (to not build bike lanes in school zones for yet another year) will have real-world consequences. Kids will die. Maybe ask some drivers who are waiting in traffic in a school zone to explain why their city doesn't have cycling lanes. Put the mic in their face and ask them to "explain it like I'm five".

Now my youngest is in Year 6 I rarely go to school at the start or end of the day. But this morning there was an open classroom event and this lovely scene greeted me. It is clear that the community is loving the e-bike life! A flock of your Terns is in the mix Lug+Carrie! Thanks for all you have done to encourage more families to ride. In honour of Ireland's #bikeweek2024, it's worth discussing the work that VivaCity has done with local authorities around the world to make cycling in urban areas safer, more convenient, and more fun. Read this great 2022 post from our very own Flora McFarlane on how VivaCity is making cycling safer for everyone by providing data-driven insights that enable evidence-based decision-making. 🚴♂️ Indego Bike Share has been featured in Grid Magazine! Bicycle Transit Systems' Nate Bowman-Johnston and City of Philadelphia's Waffiyyah Murray share insights on Indego's vision to make bike share equitable and accessible in Philadelphia. 🌟 Some key insights from the article are: -Equity in Action: Indego's strategic efforts to increase station placements in diverse neighborhoods, with a notable 10% rise in Black populations served since launch. -Strategic Expansion: Initially focused on high-density center city areas for financial stability, Indego is now prioritizing lower-income neighborhoods, with 125 new stations planned. -Affordable Access: Significant discounts for low-income riders ensure that bike share has reduced financial barriers. -Community Outreach: Innovative programs like group rides, bike education classes, and commuting initiatives build trust and encourage wider usage. Indego's dedicated efforts show that equitable and inclusive urban mobility is achievable with the right vision and strategies in place. Shout out to Indego for making strides to accessible biking for more Philadelphians! #UrbanMobility #Equity #CommunityEngagement #SustainableTransportation #IndegoBikeShare Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dbPpRxDm Photo of Waffiyyah Murray by Chris Baker Evens
