The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) first went into effect on April 1, 1984. On this 40th birthday of the FAR, we’re taking this opportunity to give a brief rundown of the regulations and how they impact the work of engineers and engineering firms. Today’s 40th anniversary is another reminder of the role of ACEC in advocating member firm interests, including proposed amendments and changes to the FAR, and educating and equipping executives for navigating its many requirements. My dear INCOSE reminded me to renew my CSEP certification ☺️. This asks for a log that documents my systems engineering activities with points summing up to a threshold and proving that I have kept on being busy with SE for the last 3 years either inside or outside the job function. I find both this log and the initial CSEP application form quite useful for an SE professional to have a reflection and close the open loops in mind. Since it has also been asked to me several times, yes I definitely recommend being a certified INCOSE member if you are in SE. In my personal case and reflection, my log shows a branch in my career during which I focused on leading/promoting SE transformation and growing younger generation rather than delivering systems to the customers. Having learned & applied SE in customer facing defense projects more than a decade ago, there was a moment when I realized that my practice was mixed a lot with business/personal practicalities. I was feeling the absence of a foundation of widely-accepted SE practices. This triggered that method-focused period a little bit after moving to the Netherlands. Although I kept on working for customer facing projects for baggage handling systems, I was so attracted to the SE methods, architecture frameworks, systems thinking and complexity management that I could not help myself learning deeper and improving myself and my SE circle - sometimes even outside the office hours. Yet, after a while -especially while trying to solve unsolvable MBSE puzzles in healthcare- the inner monster was craving for the heat of being close to the business and the customer again, and created a fear of missing all the new things happening in the software world. Ultimately, I decided to shake myself and refresh all my nerves with an out of box decision. This came with completely new learnings in a business where I am working to help people while working with great people and helping others to grow in a friendly and knowledgable culture. Being still in highly regulated environments, I have been recognizing a lot of room for improvement points both in the standardization and the business side starting from an awareness/foundation on systems engineering, systems thinking and complexity management. Doing systems engineering and improving systems engineering should not necessarily be either/or activities but there are apparently some personal qualities and desires which can push some either/or choices to be made by individuals. No one fully knows what life is going to bring to me and you in future; but in any choice we make, being in systems engineering function and staying close to the communities like INCOSE is helpful to look at the problems from a larger window. #incose #systemsengineering
