This school year, the number of homeless students, K - 12, in the Bozeman School District, INCREASED by 73.3% over last year. According to Anna Edwards, Family-School Services Coordinator Bozeman School District 7 and Family Promise board member, in the 2023-24 school year Bozeman School District identified 241 McKinney-Vento students K-12. For reference, the previous year we identified 139 students. The McKinney-Vento Act provides rights and services to children and youth experiencing homelessness, which includes those who are: sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; staying in motels, trailer parks, or campgrounds due to the lack of an adequate alternative; staying in shelters or transitional housing; or sleeping in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or similar settings.

Working to expand the availability of, and access to, emergency shelter and housing for our community members and communities.
During its most recent session, the Maine Legislature made it a priority to bolster the supports to our most vulnerable neighbors and community members. One of the ways they met that commitment was by making funds available through local McKinney-Vento liaisons to support youth experiencing homelessness and their families in their district/school. For a number of reasons, this investment in our communities is significant, and here are two: 1. Many households lose their housing because of an unplanned expense; and 2. It is easier to help households remain in their current housing than to help them find housing once unhoused.
Help me get the word out! Schools in Maine can support families with rent, utilities, and even critical home repairs to prevent students from experiencing homelessness. This is an innovative pilot program for two years and funded with 3 million dollars from the Maine state legislature. This funding will change lives- other states are taking notice! Listen here to learn more about this program as it was highlighted by national NPR! https://lnkd.in/eD-MC9yW
