An incredible and rewarding experience completing my first year as a Professor of Public Policy at the University of Redlands 🎉 Engaging students and watching them learn was a joy. Thank you to all my students for an unforgettable year. As I move into my macro policy specialization year at Louisiana State University, I am so blessed to annouce my fall internship. I’ll be working for the National Association of Social Workers’ Texas and Louisiana Chapters. For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken." In this latest section of Dr Kevin Ruck and Richard Bailey Hon FCIPR's research into PR education, Richard takes a look at skills policy and apprenticeships. Richard suggests there is a specific niche for apprenticeships: "If apprenticeships focus on technical skills and degrees emphasise broader intellectual development, then the obvious niche for apprentices is where traditional public relations meets search engine optimisation (SEO), a space often known as digital PR. There are technical skills to be learnt, including how to make best use of AI." There is a link to this latest section of the report in the comments below. The Shared Leadership Network met to explore the topic of Meaningfully Involving Families and Communities. THIS IS WHAT WE LEARNED: Meaningfully involving students, families, and communities goes beyond asking for their opinions. It means intentionally involving them in the design process, actively encouraging families and community organizations to be on campus and involved in student activities, and valuing families as experts in their larger communities. Here are some examples ⬇️ ➡️ Teams devote time and funds for home visits, encouraging parent participation in some projects and internships, allowing students to gain credit while working to better their communities. ➡️ Teams decide to adopt a year-round schedule or adjust daily start and end times to better meet the needs of the students and community. ➡️ Teams advance a bilingual and bicultural program that is different from the district’s standard language immersion. ➡️ Teams decide to use a community schools model to meet the needs of the whole community, including offering medical and dental services, opening their campuses after school hours for activities and adult education, and providing social services connections.
