Author of Local Legends, You Don't Need An MBA, From Strategy to Action. Straight-talking strategist; local government lover ⚡️
Three things you should know about local government conferences ✌🏻 1. They demand authenticity There is limited patience for corporate buzzwords, fancy slide decks and waffle. If you’re pulling local government staff away from the coalface they want to cut the shit. They want to talk about the magnitude of the challenges in front of them, the barriers around them, and they want some useful stuff they can use. (Ministers and sponsors take note.) —- 2. They build real relationships Peers, partners, sponsors, and suppliers alike. This is an environment for real conversations, great dinners, and yarns over a wine. Chats about your kids, your hometown and the job you had when you were a teenager are welcome. Sales pitches are not. You don’t need to be shiny or savvy - and the relationships you build here will last you for life. —- 3. They get sick of sitting still Local government is a non stop job. If you pull people away from their daily dramas so they can get some space and time to learn and connect (which they desperately want!)… they might fall asleep. When you’re used to running on adrenaline and scarcity, conference environments can be a snooze. Have a variety of activities, get people on their feet, have a laugh, and keep them moving. *** I just wrapped up two days at the Parks and Leisure Australia Vic/Tas Region annual conference, at Marvel Stadium. It’s my second local government conference this month, after I had the pleasure of MC duties at the LGPro VIC (Local Government Professionals) conference two weeks ago. I am always stoked to get on stage, but the truth is, I have favourites. Local government is my fave, hands down. #sorrynotsorry #localgovernment

It's Friday! How has your week been? This time last week I was sitting in the Hilton in Bournemouth, attending the UK VA Conference 2024, listening to guest speakers, providing valuable food for thought regarding our industry. 🫶How we see and value ourselves. 🫣How we market ourselves, as boundary holders or people pleasers. ✨️How we need to take time to reflect. 🤖How we can always use new technology to our advantage. Not only that, I was "encouraged" to step outside of my comfort zone. Scary stuff. 💀 But, because I took that small step (not quite for mankind, but big enough for me), I have connected with some new and established VA's, as well as our industry leaders. 👣 Today, I am preparing myself for a long drive up to the motherland, to celebrate my dear, old Granny's birthday. 🏴 Whatever you've done this week, whatever you're planning, BE AWESOME! #ukvaconference2024 #beawesome #virtualassistant #networking #mivirtualservices #yourvirtualassistant

People in Ireland are living longer lives in better health due to advances in healthcare, and lifestyle changes. This changing demographic brings huge opportunities but also challenges due to the inevitable increase in the number of individuals who will require some form of care, be that family, public or private care. Census 2022 suggests that in today’s labour market, 57% of unpaid carers are also in employment. These numbers are only set to grow and as such combining caring responsibilities and employment has become a business and societal issue. Please join us from for the launch of Ibec’s 'The Care Agenda' report with Minister Roderic O'Gorman. Following this, Kara McGann (Head of Skills and Social Policy, Ibec) will host a panel discussion featuring: Karen Kiernan - CEO, One Family Margaret Gribben - Head of DEI, Irish Life Catherine Cox - Head of Communications and Policy, Family Carers Ireland 📅 Tuesday, March 05 🕛 12:30 - 2p.m 🎟 Free - Register using the link below - Please note spaces are limited 📍 Ibec, Dublin

You know all of those posts that you are seeing of people at conferences? This is the opposite of those posts, this is of someone NOT attending conferences and their standard desk and office gear. Kudos to all of the road warriors who have spent the last weeks going from Los Angeles to Orlando and more, wow! Looking at posts it is clear that there are conferences literally every week. I went a different route and elected to opt out. Do not get me wrong, there are amazing spring conferences from the likes of HIMSS, ViVE, American College of Healthcare Executives. But for me for right now, attending was not the priority. Why? Well: 1. We have our 2024 plan pretty locked down with clear objectives and plans. Will I need to fill in more details as we progress? Sure, but for that I can have one on one conversations. 2. We have several developing leaders on our team who have never been to major conferences and having them attend and have this experience trumps me attending them [again]. 3. To really experience these conferences, you have to invest the time. Time to be present, time to connect, time away from the office. This is one reason that I am doubling down on local conferences (like the Tennessee HIMSS Chapter Summit, Nashville Health Care Council Sessions, and more). Less travel = less time commitment. Cheers to all my friends and colleagues who attended and presented at amazing Spring conferences. Maybe see you in the Fall and be in touch, me and the others that did not attend the conferences miss you! #conferences #optout
