We are happy to share a press release in English and Spanish providing more detailed insights into our First Binational Forum on Sustainable Marine Transport & Ports, hosted on Feb. 14-15, 2024 in La Paz, Baja California Sur, México in collaboration with the Mexican Chamber of Maritime Transport (CAMEINTRAM Cámara Empresarial), WWF México, and the Global Maritime Forum (GMF). With global pressure mounting to combat #climatechange and the International Maritime Organization leading #decarbonization efforts, this forum convened over 80 key stakeholders, including authorities, experts and thought-leaders, civil society organizations and a wide range of companies interested in mitigating the environmental impacts of the industry, and in sharing technological advancements, best practices, and global trends. The discussions centered on key #sustainability and energy-related actions that can enable the reduction of the environmental impact of shipping activities, with representatives from industry and NGOs making actionable commitments. Notably, private sector leaders—such as Baja Ferries Oficial—showcased proactive initiatives despite the absence of regulatory or economic incentives in #Mexico, signaling a promising shift towards sustainability in the region. According to the UNCTAD's latest Review of Maritime Transport, the maritime trade grew with 2.4% in 2023 and is expected to grow with 2% between 2024 and 2028. Balancing environmental sustainability, regulatory compliance and economic demands is vital for a prosperous, equitable and resilient future for maritime transport. Let’s talk about ‘Sustainability in the maritime industry’: 1) Definition: sustainability in the maritime industry is reducing shipping’s climate impact, improving air quality, preventing the spread of invasive species, and reducing marine noise. 2) Pillars: Three main pillars being economic, environmental, and social. 3) Responsibility: It’s the responsibility of the whole industry actors who need to work together, ports, ships, authorities, ships owners, charterers, and all partners such as logisticians or warehouses can reduce the negative impact that the maritime industry activities can have on the environment. 4) Into practice: adopting cleaner fuels, improving ship design, and implementing advanced engine and emission control technologies, the sea freight industry can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help contribute to global efforts to combat climate change. 5) Goals: IMO is responsible for regulating international shipping and aims for 11% carbon intensity reduction per 2026, 40% in 2030 and 70% reduction in 2050. They also aim for 50% absolute emission reductions by 2050. At Wilhelmsen Port Services our ambition is to shape the maritime industry’s transition towards net zero emissions and capitalize on green growth, focusing our work on climate and greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and ecosystems, circular economy, and green growth and decarbonization. Into practice we aim to: - NET ZERO emissions in our own operations before 2030 - NET ZERO emissions in our complete value chain before 2040 - NET ZERO emissions in all our investments before 2050 #maritimeindustry #wilhelmsen #portservices #esg #environment #sustainability #sustainabilityinbusiness #greeneconomy

The insights from the recent ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation) Conference show it's clear that the path to net-zero ports is not just a distant goal but a present-day action plan. Achieving net zero requires a multifaceted approach, where investments in Scope 3 emissions reporting are vital. Scope 3 encompasses all indirect emissions that occur in a port's value chain, including those from shipping and logistics. By investing in accurate reporting and reduction strategies for these emissions, ports unlock new levels of environmental accountability and performance. The discussion around Scope 3 also highlights the competitiveness factor. Ports that measure, report, and improve their Scope 3 emissions profile will not only be leaders in sustainability but will also be seen as partners of choice for businesses seeking to align with their own green mandates. As geopolitical risks escalate, ports must prioritize resilience. Part of this resilience is environmental, ensuring that ports can withstand and adapt to the changing climate and its impacts on infrastructure and operations. Investing in emissions reductions, especially in Scope 3, is part of fortifying ports against these challenges. Transparent reporting of Scope 3 emissions fosters trust and opens dialogue between ports and the broader community. It's about taking moral responsibility for the future we're crafting and providing a model for industries and sectors worldwide. CEOs, like Benoit Rochet of Port Boulogne Calais, emphasize the focus on Scope 3 emissions as a critical battlefront against climate change. Such leadership can inspire a domino effect, encouraging ports globally to harness the same commitment and drive towards comprehensive sustainability. In a time where European investment in port infrastructure is under scrutiny, it's imperative that Scope 3 emissions become a key consideration. EU's support can facilitate this transition, offering ports the financial backing and policy framework needed to take bold steps. Our colleagues Ani Matcharashvili and Stefana Sopco brought back valuable information, and we are confident the decarbonization landscape is expanding worldwide. Track and analyze emissions in and around the port to develop an actionable decarbonization strategy. EmissionInsider empowers ports to make better decisions to eliminate emissions from ships, trucks, and rail. #Scope3 #Decarbonization #Sustainability #NetZero
