Patience is a Virtue: Growing a Bonsai Jade the Natural Way
Many bonsai enthusiasts use pruning and wiring to achieve their desired shapes. But what about a more natural approach? I'm currently cultivating a bonsai Jade plant (Crassula Ovata) without any cuts, bends, or wire!
In pic: My 4 years old Jade plant ☘️
To encourage a compact form, I'm using a well-draining soil mix of:
Cocopeat and fine river gravels: Provides good aeration and moisture retention.
Pumice stone: Enhances drainage and prevents root rot.
Vermicompost: Adds essential nutrients for healthy growth.
This combination allows for controlled watering, promoting a slower growth rate and potentially smaller leaves – key characteristics of a bonsai.
I'll be sharing progress updates on how this Jade develops. Any tips for natural bonsai growth are welcome in the comments! #bonsai#jadeplant#naturalbonsai#bonsaicultivation#bonsaitree#bonsaijourney#gardeningtips#gardeningcoach

There are different pruning methods for grapevines: 🍇
1) Manual Pruning: 👇
- Manual pruning applies to all types of pruning (cordon with spurs, Guyot, Cazenave, etc.).
- Some training systems like Gobelet, which are "3D" systems, can only be pruned by hand.
- Certain pruning types, such as Guyot, cannot be mechanized except for pre-pruning.
Typically, before manual pruning, the vine is pre-pruned mechanically.
Tips:
- If a late pruning is needed to delay budburst and protect against spring frosts, leave a minimum of 8 buds per cane during pre-pruning to benefit from acrotony strength.
- Regarding non-mutilating pruning, practicality is essential. Adopt non-mutilating pruning principles from planting, allowing easier work for pruners for Cordon and Guyot pruning while respecting sap flow.
2) Mechanical Pruning: 👇
Mechanical pruning is suitable only in topographically adapted situations (plains) and is not suitable for all grape varieties.
Different modes of mechanical pruning include:
- Standard mechanical pruning, where the cut height above the cordon depends on the desired bud load (and thus yield) per vine and per hectare. Adjust trunk height and planting density accordingly. https://lnkd.in/dTKBqgg7
- Precision Mechanical Pruning (PMP) requires specialized equipment and vineyard setup (poles, wire...). The cut height is usually 2cm above the cordon, with any uncut canes done by hand. Adjust trunk height and planting density accordingly. https://lnkd.in/dxZ83QeA
- Hedge/box pruning is a mechanized system with a high-placed cordon as the vegetation is not trellised. It involves pre-pruning with a pre-pruner.
3) Minimal Pruning (MP): 👇
Minimal pruning involves not pruning the vine once the cordon and spurs are established, usually at 1.8 meters height. Vegetative growth is directed outward due to acrotony, requiring lateral trimming after a few years.
Key Points: 👨🏫 👩🏫
- All modes of mechanical pruning and minimal pruning are economically viable alternatives to manual pruning for certain wine ranges (IGP, varietal wines, etc.).
- In manual pruning, production costs for a medium-density cordon vine are 40 to 50 hours per hectare, compared to 8 hours for precision flat pruning (these are indicative figures, situation-dependent: grape variety x planting density x training system x pruning type).
- Adapt trunk height and planting density accordingly.
- The number of buds and thus the number of clusters per vine vary based on grape variety, pruning method, cut height, and terroir (soil x climate).
- Avoid implementing mechanical pruning in overly vigorous situations, as dense vegetation can lead to issues such as poor penetration of chemical treatments, fungal diseases, and an unfavorable microclimate for grape quality.
