Distributor Case-Study Questions This news on WMT’s new automated, grocery-DCs raises questions for me: 1.       Is automating DCs (to lower the cost-to-serve for orders) migrating from big DCs to small distributor locations? If so, how fast and for what functions? (The leading solutions are from locusrobotics.com) 2.       These new DCs parallel WMT’s monster X-docking ones that feed mostly non-grocery SKUs into super-stores. But, who will pay for the extra costs of fulfilling (and in many cases delivering) grocery orders to customers? a.       If WMT charges their full incremental cost (plus a profit margin?) to the customer, won’t they go back to picking their own orders in the store? b.      Both WMT and AMZ have big offsetting profit centers to subsidize, unprofitable, small-dollar picks and orders and costlier, fast delivery. Distributors don’t. c.       How well does your firm ID and manage net-unprofitable – picks, orders and customers? 3.       WMT’s capital investment is estimated to be $22B over the next year. Kroger kicked-off a huge auto-DC plan in 2018. Results have been poor: Google "Kroger + Ocado". Distributors: are your ecommerce and automation plans informed by your most net-profitable customers needs (their value > your cost) in your most, net-profitable segment?
