On the most recent episode of The Coin: Black History on the Other Side podcast, we delve into Harvard University's less-explored connections to slavery and institutional racism. Established in 1636, Harvard is renowned as the oldest seat of higher education in the United States. However, it is not widely known that more than 70 individuals were held in bondage by Harvard leaders, faculty, and staff from 1636 to 1783. #HarvardUniversity #slaveryawareness #educationalhistory #podcastinsights

Distressing, especially when you think about the loss of a black studies department in the context of the history of getting black studies into the college curriculum in the first place. It was such a hard won fight. And to find it eroding 50 years later… …but the attack has been ongoing. For whatever set of complex reasons, the attack is now bearing fruit. Black studies departments have been facing increasing marginalization for many years now. This is why the wise repeat the mantra, “The struggle continues”, so that we stay vigilant. It’s important to also keep in mind the other part of that rallying cry, that is less often included: “And victory is certain”. The struggle continues, but with unwavering attention and collective effort, victory is certain.
The undergrad Black Studies degree has been cancelled by Birmingham City University. We still have MA but this is an institutionally racist move that continues the attack on Black thought in higher ed. Full vid pouring (but not spilling) the tea on the Make It Plain Podcast: youtu.be/g7-oQU2XTNY
