India’s smart metering market is on the cusp of exponential growth. Following the success of various pilot projects across the country and positive outcomes for stakeholders, the pace of smart meter awards and installation is increasing. As of May 2024, over 11 million smart meters have been installed in the country, while a total of 222 million smart consumer meters have been sanctioned. This is a significant increase compared to the approximately 1.7 million smart meters that were installed during 2021-22. According to the National Smart Grid Mission, in 2023-24, nearly 4.8 million smart consumer meters were installed, which is more than three times the number installed in the previous year. Smart Netmeter versus static Net meter – Which one should be preferred? With the announcement of Surya ghar muft Bijli ( household free #solar #energy scheme)Yojana, in 10 million houses, definitely now there is a immediate need of 10 million #NetMeter. This has raised a new question. what utility should do? whether to install Smart Meter as net meter or use static net meter, specially in the area where smart Metering installation has yet not started. The question has high relevance as as per MOP directive existing static Meters has to be replaced by Smart Meter.. in brief, the dilemma has crop up, if utility install static net meters, same need to be replaced by them in next 2 to 3 years with Smart metres. If we analyse both Meter, then regarding #smartmeters as net meter 1. If utility does not have #HES #MDMS system, then even though they stall #smartmeter with #gsm NIC, they may not able to communicate and thus loose the major feature 2. high cost. 3. Whether Availablity can be issue considering large pending order 4. Here, it is important to note few things- Smart Meter, even without communication can always work as equal to static net meter. In simple word, it will not be inferior. Static Net meter - 1. In case we replace any static meter much before its useful life ( say place in two years against useful life of 10 years) then it is not only the waste of capex money ( thus consumer higher tariff), but it is also loss of Forex spent to make Meter and also generation of large electronic ( hazard)waste when these will be scrapped. Further, it is important to note that Smart has far better performance as it has feature of alert, communication, utility and consumer can get online data about energy flow ( very critical for power planning and roof top efficiency monitoring)immediate alert, in case of power outage. For net Metering connection, power outage is very critical as outage means #rooftopsolar generation will also become zero. For that duration. This will defeat the basic purpose. In brief, those #utilities which have already initiated the process of Smart Meter installation, should talk to her #AMISP about the need of scattered installation and work out a formula about the payment and performance SLA. ( in fact same, Formula can be used for new connection applications which are also scattered.) Needless to say if the smart metering network is available, it is always better to have Smart Meter as net meter. Regarding availability, I think , manufacturing wise , both are similar and even the BOM part of meter is same, so there is no major difference between the two. Views and suggestions are welcome.
