Recently forced to change the way I view myself, the world, and others. I'm taking advantage of the opportunity to both find and improve myself, my Biodefense career, and the world around me when possible.
I admit bias, but feel strongly enough about this that I'm writing my own commentary, something I never do, rather than just forwarding Greg's post. If you are even slightly interested in going to grad school for anything at all, look at this program and consider if it could tie into your interests, career goals, and passions! It is extremely well-run, and is designed to meet people where they are. I finished the MS program this past May, and already miss it dearly. I met and learned with and from everyone one could imagine, from every walk of life. This included passionate undergrads doing dual-enrollment in the MS program alongside a BS program in a different field, PhD students, people already in their ideal career path who were just interested in or passionate about BioD and wanted to take advantage of their employer's continuing education benefits in an interesting and relevant way, and even those who wanted to make a mid-career shift. I even met and learned with and from many people who are just a few years off from retirement who have been leaders in the field and in national security for decades, and wanted to enhance and "unpack" their understanding of their life's work and also share it with others who have a similar mindset, and help support future leaders in the field. If you are considering ANY grad program, even if you think you know exactly what you want to do, where you want to go, etc., humor me and at least look at the link Greg posted below, or reach out to anyone associated with the program to find out more (heck, reach out to me, even, I'll try to pause between sentences!)! At worst, you waste 5-10 minutes of your day reading about it, and at best, you are stunned to realize that your passions and career actually tie into BioD in some unexpected way, and you walk away with a graduate degree from a respected institution and leader in the field, a lifelong community of friends and fellow scholars who will always have your backs, and exposure to numerous career opportunities, if not even a new rewarding job directly in the program. I received so much support and help from various people in the program, including during the most difficult year of my personal life, when I seriously considered dropping the program, and likely would have if not for my academic advisor, professors, Greg himself, guest faculty for specific courses, guest lecturers for one-off lectures, classmates, and even fellow guests who were not affiliated with the program in any way but were reoccurring faces at weekly Hayden Center lectures sponsored through the program, etc. All of these people demonstrated care for me as both a person and as a student, and pushed me gently while offering their own personal life stories and advice to help me walk away with more empowerment than I've ever had before, and a competitive degree I'm genuinely proud of, when I needed it most, and it hasn't stopped at all just because I've graduated. Just check it out.
