🌍 We're proud to support Amelia (by Regourd Aviation) on their sustainable aviation journey. Since 2022, our Flights Footprint platform helps estimate and reduce the full climate impact of flights, considering both CO2 and non-CO2 effects. 🔍 By analyzing Amelia's flights, we've implemented contrail avoidance strategies on a contrail-sensitive city-pair, reducing 17 tons of CO2e since June 2024. This effort shows a 30-40% reduction in climate impact with minimal fuel increase. 🤝 Supported by CORAC and Direction Generale de l'Aviation Civile under France 2030, this initiative is a first in Europe in an operational context. We'll continue refining our models and automating recommendations to enhance sustainable aviation. 🚀 Thanks to all teams involved for their dedication and collaboration. You don’t need to be an oracle; 40 feet (12,192 meters) mean a definite disaster for many human settlements around the world. Human activities involve a lot of parameters in terms of carbon emissions, airways and assigned random tracks full of jets are part of them. Therefore, it’s time to stop bragging about how many airliners are in the troposphere or tropopause flying at the same time. Honestly, for the benefit of our children and grandchildren, it’s time to focus on how many airliners and business/private jets are in the air simultaneously meeting the sustainable aviation criteria. Aircraft manufacturers, related OEMs and the operators have been studying on the subject. IMHO, that will not be a cure to neutralize the threat at the present pace. The contributors of the aviation industry, at least as a majority, need to work stronger in harmony in the present highly fragile context of the world.

Attending the consultation organized by the European Commission today on monitoring, reporting & verification (MRV) of aviation’s non-CO2 impact on the climate. The #ipcc estimates the sum of Non CO2 effects from aviation contribute 2-4 times more to global warming than CO2 emissions alone. As a part of the Fit for 55 climate package, the #euets has been amended to take into account full impact from flights with the introduction of MRV obligations of Non CO2 effects (NOx, SO2, H2O and soot) for aircraft operators as of 1 January 2025. ✈️New research shows that although modern planes emit less carbon than older aircraft, they may be contributing more to #ClimateChange through #Contrails ☁️📈 To reduce jet fuel consumption, modern aircraft are designed to fly at higher altitudes: this creates less carbon emissions per passenger 📉 However, higher altitudes also create contrails that take longer to dissipate – creating a warming effect for longer ⬆️☁️ The study also found that private jets 💸 produce more contrails than previously thought, adding to concerns about the impact of the super rich on #ClimateChange through excessive use of these aircraft. A milestone in sustainable aviation 👏 The world's first in-flight study on the impact of using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) reveals significant reductions in non-CO2 emissions. Part of the test results included a 56% reduction in the number of contrail ice crystals per mass of unblended SAF consumed compared to regular jet fuel 📉 The study outcomes look promising in the efforts to reduce the effects of global warming. Just recently I’ve posted some insights from an academic presentation on the progress regarding insights w.r.t. the aviation non-CO2. Today, the well-respected The Seattle Times published a feature article on the same. The article provides a very helpful overview on what it is, research being undertaken and insights gained regarding its climate impact, the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification the EU is now setting up and opportunities and challenges in mitigating these effects. With regard to the latter this piece, in my view, is too pessimistic as it only focuses on challenges of optimization flight paths while there are too much less challenging measure such as cleaner fuel (SAF and jet fuel). Very interesting and valuable read for anyone caring about aviation climate impact.
