The theme of Tourism Awareness Week 2024 – Canada: powered by Tourism – is fitting for Kingston. The sector locally is driven by a range of tourism experiences from visiting friends and family to motor coach tours, business meetings and sport events to film and music production – and tourism in Kingston happens year-round.  Tourism is a key driver of Kingston’s economy. Kingston has one of the largest hospitality and accommodation workforces in Canada providing almost 9% of Kingston’s workforce or 15,000 tourism-related jobs. The RTO 9 region overall is home to 7,000 tourism businesses. 2023 by the numbers: $544 million economic impact 1.9 million visitors 628,300 room nights 51% overnight visitors 49% day visitors

Pop Quiz: Which is the more popular tourist attraction? A) The southernmost tip of Africa B) The southwesternmost tip of Africa If you guessed B, you’re correct! But why? There are plenty of reasons. The Cape of Good Hope boasts rich history, breathtaking views, proximity to Cape Town’s vibrant attractions, and is part of a stunning National Park. So why bother highlighting the “southwesternmost tip” of Africa at all? Here’s the thing: for most tourists, this is as far south as they’ll ever venture on the continent (unless they take the trip to Cape Agulhas, the actual southernmost point). The “southwesternmost” designation adds a commemorative milestone to the experience. By simply adding a sign, they created a memorable bonus attraction that enhances the Cape Town visit—no exaggerations needed. This wouldn’t work if it were the only attraction in the area. If that were the case, it would need to be the absolute southernmost tip to stand out. But as part of Cape Town’s many offerings, “southwesternmost” is just one more reason to visit. Business Lesson #1: If you’re delivering deep value elsewhere, don’t obsess over the one feature where your competitor seems to edge ahead. Maybe their payment processor is a little cheaper, but your offering provides far more value overall. (And your solution isn’t just the “cheapest”; it’s the best value.) The “southwesternmost tip” of Africa isn’t about being the best at one thing; it’s about being part of a bigger, unforgettable experience. Business Lesson #2: Know your customer’s true desire. If tourists truly needed to see the southernmost tip, the solution would be more day trips from Cape Town. But if what they really want is a commemorative photo celebrating their travel near the tip of the continent? That sign fits the bill perfectly.

The ministry of tourism and wildlife has established institutions with clear mandates to ensure the country is a competitive destination. Kenya Utalii College has been assigned the training mandate ,Tourism Fund is meant to collect levy for training ,marketing and development of the industry, Tourism Regulatory does the regulation of standards of hospitality and tourism facilities as well as training institutions ,Kenya Tourism Board has the sole mandate of marketing the country while Kenyatta International Convention Center drives conferencing agenda in the country. Additionally, Bomas of Kenya is tasked with promoting cultural tourism in the country. Each statutory body is supposed to stick to its specific mandate. Duplication of mandates will bring confusion and wastage of the scarce resources. There is a growing tendency by some institutions to operate outside their areas of responsibility The CS incharge of the crucial docket must ensure every institution performs its mandate

Tomorrow, Samoa hosts the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia. This will bring considerable global attention. CHOGM also gives Samoa a perfect opportunity to showcase its rich engaging culture, pristine natural environment and aiga (family) based tourism product offering to the rest of the world. Release of pent-up travel demand post Covid saw Samoa's economy recover strongly last year. Will the tourism upturn continue or room capacity limits push back on this remarkable performance. How does Samoa maximise its tourism opportunities and what are the economy-wide benefits of running the leisure economy at close to its potential. Invest in #tourism in #Africa in a minute Africa is an amazing place to #invest in tourism. The continent has a rich and diverse history and culture that is worth exploring. It is also a beautiful place to visit, with exuberant tropical forests, arid deserts... in short, an almost infinite variety of landscapes. As in any sector, there are many different types of tourism that can be explored in Africa, including safaris, cultural experiences and adventure sports, or business tourism which is experiencing significant growth. If you are looking for tourism investment opportunities, you should consider investing in Africa as it has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, as well as amazing wildlife parks where you can see lions, elephants and giraffes in the wild. The ways to invest in tourism businesses in Africa are diverse, from direct investments in local tourism businesses, such as hotels, tour companies and tour guides. Recent figures from Visit Gloucester reveal that tourism contributes over £300 million to the local economy in the city. In 2023 tourists spent just under £250 million in Gloucester. Over a third of that was in Gloucester’s shops and another third was in restaurants and cafes — with the overall economic impact reaching £310 million in total. The Story of NeighborhoodTZ Organization Founded in September 2019, NeighborhoodTZ began as a visionary initiative to connect communities and bridge cultural gaps through tourism. Established by individuals passionate about promoting local heritage, the organization's first endeavor was a community tourism project in the scenic Karatu region of Tanzania. This initiative sought to offer tourists an immersive experience by walking alongside locals, learning about their daily lives, and participating in cultural activities. Visitors would engage in traditional dances, farming practices, and even crafts, gaining a deeper understanding of the native ways of life while directly supporting the community. The program was a promising start. Tourists left with a profound respect for Tanzanian culture, and the local community began to reap economic and social benefits from these interactions. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 abruptly halted international travel. The sudden collapse of tourism left NeighborhoodTZ grappling with unforeseen challenges. Despite the setbacks, the organization has remained committed to its mission. It has since explored innovative ways to sustain its vision, such as leveraging digital platforms to share cultural stories and preparing for a resurgence of tourism. The experience reinforced NeighborhoodTZ's resolve to adapt and continue fostering meaningful connections between people and cultures. This is only the beginning of the story of NeighborhoodTZ, a testament to resilience, community, and the enduring spirit of cultural exchange.
