Ever found yourself intrigued by the strategies airlines employ to manage overbookings? Well, our latest deep dive into the science of overbooking reveals a sophisticated blend of dynamic programming and simulation, promising a new horizon in revenue optimization for the airline industry. 🛫💼 In a collaborative effort with Abhijit Anil, Rahull R Borana, and Jordan Ehlinger, we embarked on a fascinating journey to unravel the complexities behind flight overbooking. Our mission was simple yet ambitious: to craft a more profitable and customer-friendly approach to handling those inevitable "overbooked" scenarios. Leveraging historical data and mathematical prowess, we explored several strategies, simulating scenarios that ranged from a cautious few to a daring 15 extra seats. Our findings? A sweet spot that maximizes revenue while minimizing disruptions - a win-win for both airlines and passengers. 📊✈️ What's more, our analysis didn't stop at mere theory. Through rigorous simulation, including a Monte Carlo approach, we tested our strategies against the unpredictable nature of human behavior, ensuring our recommendations stand firm in the face of real-world uncertainties. The journey has been nothing short of enlightening, revealing that the right balance of dynamic pricing and strategic overbooking can lead to enhanced profitability and a better customer experience. It's a testament to the power of analytics and team collaboration in solving complex industry challenges. For those keen on a deep dive into our methodology, findings, and the dynamic interplay between risk management and revenue optimization, I invite you to read our full analysis on Medium. Your insights and perspectives are invaluable as we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in airline management. Let's soar to new heights together! 🚀 #Airlines #RevenueManagement #DynamicProgramming #Simulation #MonteCarloSimulations #PricingStrategyOptimization #Teamwork #Innovation #Analytics #MonteCarloSimulation

Be obsessive about listening to your client(s). In a survey conducted by Southwest Airlines 80% of its fliers favored assigned seats, while the No. 1 reason they switched to a competitor was because of seating. What tradition would your client prefer you to drop/change for their benefit? For me, I think a higher adoption of client facing technology tools. We're getting there, but the insurance industry is slow to adopt. Thankful for IMA being progressive in this area, investing in hopeful tech disrupters so they can scale and serve the whole industry. We share. We're nice. ;)

Everyone I've worked with knows I am a Southwest LOYALIST, and will always book on SW unless it is simply not an option for the destination. SWA won me over completely in the year every other airline imposed baggage fees due to the skyrocketing fuel costs going on. I'm sure you all noticed that even though fuel prices returned to reasonable levels, those fees have never gone away and never will. I love open seating, but even more I (and my employers paying expenses) have loved the pricing advantage that system has enabled over the years. I know it's too late; the change to assigned/designated seating is happening. Southwest, I fear you are losing your differentiation with this choice. I predict within 18 months there will no longer be anything different, or special, about Southwest Airlines and every other carrier out there. Where we now enjoy a cabin where everyone can actually use their laptops in any seat and where any seat provides adequate legroom, soon the SWA cabins will be like American Airlines' - you will HAVE to buy a premium seat to have room to work or keep your knees out of the back of the passenger in front of you. I'm sure people aren't naive enough to believe that there is going to be a reduction in seats to acommodate the designated seating. No, only a squeezing of the cheap seats together. Kudos on the addition of red eye options, truly- I've always wondered why SWA wasn't maximizing overnights, seems aligned with the overall value, efficient logistics, and convenience philosophy. Are you really prepared culturally to meet the expectations that passengers have of premium airlines? I think a lot of us SW loyalists enjoy the folksy casual approach and are understanding because of the value we get. You do know that tolerance is going to evaporate, right? If you're going to be like the big boys, then you will have to be like the big boys and elevate the experience overall. Lastly, I would agree with many others who have commented on other posts- who are these customers that you "heard"? I've been a long, long time frequent flyer, haven't been asked or surveyed at all.... I'm not going to bail on you now, my beloved airline of Love. I will give the new rollout a chance, but if the experience turns into every other airline, you'll only win me when you can under-price every other airline. That will be a sad day. #SouthwestAirlines
