CLEAN-Air(Africa) is excited to witness a significant step towards promoting #cleancooking in Tanzania. Last week, the President of #Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu, demonstrated #cleancooking practices using #LPG, to replace traditional use of polluting #wood and #charcoal, fuels that are predominantly used in the country. This live cooking demonstration was part of the "Declaration of Kizimkazi," which is not only showcasing the benefits of clean cooking but also sparking a national debate on the importance of adopting cleaner energy solutions for #health, #genderequality, the environment and climate. By highlighting the advantages of using LPG for cooking, the President is setting a powerful example to help promote population scale of adoption of truly clean cooking in Tanzania aligned with the #SDG7 goal of Universal Access to Clean Modern Energy by 2030. With colleagues from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), we are pleased to be contributing to clean cooking policy in Tanzania with important research on how to encourage communities to fully transition from polluting solid fuels to clean cooking with LPG. For more information on this research please see www.cleanairafrica.com. Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/dp4XFTbt #CleanCooking #CleanEnergy

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 In the 1960s, Sarawak, Malaysia, faced a serious malaria outbreak. The WHO’s solution was to spray DDT, a powerful insecticide. While this worked—it killed the disease-carrying mosquitoes and reduced malaria— it had unforeseen side effects. The DDT not only eliminated mosquitoes but also destroyed parasitic wasps that kept roof-damaging caterpillars in check. Without these wasps, the caterpillars thrived and caused roofs to collapse. Additionally, the DDT affected a lot of other insects which were eaten by small lizards (geckos), leading to toxic accumulations of DDT. When the local cats ate these geckos, they were poisoned too. With the cats dying off, the rat population surged, creating new problems: the rats invaded homes, destroyed crops, and spread diseases. The Royal Air Force (Sarawak was a British colony at the time) parachuted live cats into the region in a mission known as “Operation Cat Drop”. The cats helped control the rat population and stabilize the situation. This case highlights how interventions in one part of an ecosystem can have unintended consequences, showing the complexity of ecological systems and the importance of systems thinking in managing such challenges.
