Students deserve safe, healthy, and climate resilient schools. 🏫 💚 Join The Passive House Network to learn how #PassiveHouse implementation in and adaptation to school systems small and large can meet the growing challenges of climate, power supply, and social well-being. Experts from the US and worldwide will provide critical insights through case studies and discuss what’s possible next in panel discussions. As communities invest in new construction and retrofit old buildings, let’s deliver school buildings that are as robust as our students and communities deserve. Featuring: Naomi C.O. Beal Beal, PassivhausMAINE Ann-Marie Fallon, Architype, UK Richard Lo, Kaplan Thompson Architects Timothy Lock, Opal Architecture Barry McCarron, South West College, Northern Ireland Moderated by Ken Levenson, The Passive House Network Learning Objectives: --> Outline how Passive House standards support successful new school buildings and retrofits. --> Describe the unique challenges schools present and successful strategies to overcome them. --> Identify successful project energy balance design and key implementation aspects from enclosure to programming to HVAC systems. --> Describe challenges and strategies addressing specialty uses in school buildings such as cafeterias, labs, and gymnasiums. #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #architecture #climateaction #healthyschools #students #passivhaus #efficiencyfirst #energy #cleanair

📓 ✏ It's Back to School Month, and we wanted to feature some of our favorite educational designs. Today we're talking about the Myhal Centre for Engineering, Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada. By utilizing AirFixture CLW linear perimeter troughs, along with personal comfort UFAD diffusers Élan-08R-180 and Élan-08R-360, the Myhal Centre was able to achieve its goal of an energy use intensity of 100 kWh/m2 per year. "Two of the key mechanical design features include Underfloor Air Distribution (UFAD) and natural ventilation with mechanical exhaust / operable windows. The energy model for this building was showing promising results through UFAD. To increase the U of T’s comfort with the system, we worked with the architect to incorporate four shafts on the building quadrants. This way, no floor diffuser was more than 50 feet from the riser. This reduced the need for reliance on underfloor ductwork. The benefits from using UFAD included greater flexibility, increased indoor air quality, increased economizer user, quiet operations, and increased chiller efficiency. In the 480-seat auditorium, UFAD leads to greater comfort for users. Air flows from under the seats, through the displacement diffusers, and returns above and behind the large screen at the front of the auditorium." https://lnkd.in/edqTPnjB #ufad #raisedaccessfloor #highereducation #LEED Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios) RJC Engineers Smith + Andersen Montgomery Sisam Architects

How do you design a sustainable and energy-efficient building in the middle of the Arctic? Fahad I., ASMA Yazdipouran, Ankita Sharma and Sonia Tsang worked closely with the Department of National Defence to come up with a design for the multipurpose building for their capstone project. Within three short months, the students proposed a concept design and energy model that was well received by the client. “We needed to consider issues that were new to us, such as construction constraints, the need for a foundation that could withstand ground movement and the lack of running water,” says Sonia. Their final design for an angled roof building includes many elements to reduce energy use and maximize energy efficiency. These include a building envelope designed for air tightness, using cross-laminated timber for its insulation properties and installing triple-glazed windows. Knowing that climate change could bring a significant increase in average temperature to the site, the students future-proofed the design by proposing an adjustable screw jack foundation. This allows the building level to be adjusted manually to adapt to changing ground movement. 🥳 We’re delighted to confirm that our project for Transforming Futures Trust at Mount Tamar School, funded by the Department for Education with Futures for Somerset Ltd (The Somerset Local Education Partnership), has received planning permission. Mount Tamar specialises in educating children with additional Social, Emotional, & Mental Health (#SEMH) needs. Project Recap 🔍 A brand new secondary #SEND building, will compromise of 9x classrooms (2x specialist science & DT / art classrooms, designed in line with the school curriculum, as well as a series of breakout and multi-purpose support spaces for students and staff). The development includes a series of low-carbon and sustainable design methodologies, including mechanical interventions such as air-source heat pumps (ASHPs), solar PV panels, and electric boilers, as well as a fabric-first approach to create a facility that not only meets the school's requirements but is also environmentally friendly throughout its life cycle. The design of the school has arisen through the contextual analysis, site constraints and the client brief, our main development principles are: 🧡 People at the heart of every project. 🏞️ Respect to the surrounding landscape. ⌺ Functionality – space planning of core functions and their adjacencies. 🍃 Environmental – utilising opportunities for sustainable design. 🌳 Connections with external spaces and routes. 🧑🏫 Enabling the school to continue with as minimal disruption as possible during its development. #education #architecture #design Ben Chamberlain | Joyce Clifford | Ankitha Dev | Black Box Planning | Simpson TWS | Randall Simmonds LLP | Acoustic Consultants Limited | CPW

ARC Oxford looks to create 500 jobs with new lab-ready development Ascent 💼👀 ARC | Advanced Research Clusters Oxford has secured planning permission to demolish seven buildings at the campus and develop a new state-of the art facility for the science, technology and innovation sector. ‘Ascent’, once operational, is estimated to create approximately 500 jobs and contribute £38 million GVA to the economy annually. The new 105,000 sq. ft lab-ready development will feature a rooftop lounge, wellness spaces, gym and end-of-trip facilities. Construction is set to commence later this year. Designed by architects Spratley & Partners, Ascent will target BREEAM Excellent rating and deliver a 40 per cent reduction in operational carbon emissions compared to current building regulations. The landscaping, headed up by Macgregor Smith, will enable mature trees to be retained and see the introduction of ‘meaningful greening’ – including sustainable drainage systems and a new green biodiverse roof that will adapt to climate change. Dan Williams, director of asset management at ARC Oxford, said...
