Funding options are diversifying, giving early-stage, mature, and exiting businesses a wider variety of ways to raise capital and/or derive liquidity. Growth equity funding has been on the rise for several years, and is starting to eclipse full buyouts, while PEs are expanding into debt financing. At the same time, both PEs and VCs are sitting on cash. Global private equity and venture capital funds held $2.62 trillion in total uncommitted capital at the end of 2024 H2, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence and Preqin data. Funds collectively added $49.44 billion to cash reserves in the first six months of this year, more than 1.7x the $27.97 billion in dry powder added during the previous 12-month period. The challenge lies in connecting cash to companies. For funders, finding good investments is too often "like finding a needle in a haystack." For business founders and owners, the funding landscape is fragmented and confusing. In this environment, the role of trusted advisors who have broad perspective, extensive industry knowledge, and deep networks is critical to "connecting the dots" of capital and companies. In my journey through the finance realm, understanding portfolio valuation has been a cornerstone experience. One message that resonates is the importance of ASC 820 in determining the fair value of venture capital investments. It’s fascinating how transparent guidelines not only help report accurately but also instill confidence among investors. Through this process, I learned that maintaining a consistent approach in valuation can lead to better decision-making based on solid data rather than arbitrary estimates. This is especially vital in high-risk markets like venture capital, where assets often lack clear prices to guide value assessments. For anyone involved in venture investments, adopting a systematic valuation process is crucial. Regularly assess your portfolio using ASC 820 guidelines, ensuring you grasp the factors impacting your investments. This not only boosts transparency but also enhances trust with stakeholders. How have you approached valuation in your investment strategies? Let’s share insights to help each other navigate this critical aspect of financial accuracy!

Brand partnership • Helping middle-market companies in the industrials, manufacturing, services, wholesale, & distribution space achieve exponential growth via value creation, cost reduction, and profitability enhancements, in record time.
What is Private Equity 3.0??? Private equity is facing a new challenge as traditional methods of generating returns, such as using debt to buy and sell companies, are becoming less effective due to high interest rates and asset prices. The industry's focus is shifting to portfolio-operations executives, who are gaining importance in transforming businesses to increase profitability through technology and operational improvements. Historically, private equity relied on dealmakers to maximize profits through financial engineering, but now firms are looking for new ways to generate returns. This has led to the rise of portfolio-operations professionals, who work closely with management teams to optimize day-to-day operations, reduce costs, and create new revenue streams. These professionals are increasingly being brought into the deal room to assess the technological potential of acquisitions, marking a shift to what is being called "private equity 3.0." In this new model, private equity firms focus on transforming businesses, often using technology like AI or automation, to create efficiencies and new opportunities for growth. Portfolio operations teams, once in the background, are now playing a crucial role in private equity’s strategy, as financial engineering alone is no longer sufficient to achieve the desired returns. This shift leads to potential conflicts between dealmakers and operations teams as they navigate differing approaches to value creation. Ultimately, the rising importance of portfolio-operations professionals reflects a broader evolution in the private equity industry, where operational improvements and business transformations are becoming key drivers of success.

Senior Director ╽ Healthcare ╽ Technology ╽ Global, multi-functional expert ╽ Raised $200Mn+ capital ╽ Delivered $90Mn+ hard, $4Bn+ soft savings
Interesting read on the evolution of technology function becoming an important value lever for private equity funds in driving value for their portfolio companies. Some of my favorite points from the article that make the case the growing importance of technology: - Board members want to spend more time with CIOs vs. previously wherein CIOs were allocated a few minutes towards the end of board meetings - PE investors increasingly look at the quality and strength of the CIO at their portfolio companies vs previously focusing only on CEOs and/or CFOs - PE firms leveraging CIOs during due diligence on potential investments as technology touches all aspects of the business today This is just another example of how technology as a function and CIO as a role are becoming increasingly integral to the success of businesses. https://lnkd.in/ga8fw3bs
