ACTIVE, a project in partnership with Institute for Development Impact - I4DI, Mars, and USAID, was honored to have Mr. Ir. Medrilzam, M. Prof. Econ, Ph.D., Director of Forestry and Water Resources Conservation at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, and Brian Dusza, Director of USAID Indonesia’s Environment Office, as opening speakers at our event on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in Jakarta. The event, titled “Increasing Farmer Productivity and Income through Partnerships Based on Integrated Risk Management,” was held at the General Insurance Association of Indonesia (AAUI) headquarters and hosted by ACTIVE, AAUI, and PISAgro, a public-private partnership platform of Indonesia’s agriculture companies and organizations. Over 100 participants engaged in discussions on the adoption of effective agricultural insurance models for horticultural commodities and food crops, and parametric Soil Moisture Index insurance using satellite data. The workshop also explored the potential for rural entrepreneurs to partner with off-taker companies, insurance firms, and the government in educating farmers and distributing agricultural insurance. A key highlight from the event was the significant opportunity for collaboration between the government and private sector to expand agricultural insurance services in Indonesia. We are pleased to announce that YANMAR AGRIBUSINESS Co., Ltd. and our local subsidiary, Yanmar Philippines Corporation, have entered a collaboration with Faeger Co. Ltd. Corporation to reduce methane emissions from rice paddies in the Philippines. This initiative will utilize the innovative water management method known as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD). Starting in November 2024, we will commence demonstration tests aimed at promoting the early adoption of AWD and achieving significant decarbonization benefits. Methane emissions from rice paddies in the Philippines account for approximately 20% of the total greenhouse gases emitted across all industries. This collaboration is a crucial step in addressing this pressing issue. Supported by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, we are leveraging the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and a robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system to encourage the widespread use of AWD in the ASEAN region. Our goal is to not only reduce methane emissions but also to secure income for local agricultural producers through the creation of carbon credits. These credits will also be used for the Yanmar Group's carbon offsetting efforts, contributing to the development of sustainable agriculture that balances environmental impact reduction with increased producer income.
