Our food and fibre team has written a white paper about how the industry and its leaders can finance and make the shift towards regenerative agriculture methods. It’s vital for the decarbonisation project that they do, but also for the future survival of the industry and the companies that operate in it. Food industry leaders recognise this but many are not sure how to make the shift. This report, launched at #climateweekNY has some answers.
Based on hundreds of hours working with leading food companies, we've synthesised the roadmap for global food industry leaders to drive, finance, and successfully transition their supply chains to regenerative agriculture. The seven step process enables companies to systematically tackle the challenges and benefit from opportunities generated by the transition. Hi Gemma Cranston and Dave Haynes for this piece of important work. I do feel we should move further in our work. For decades, chemical agriculture companies, commodity traders, and seed patent owners continues to enjoy state-backed profits while contributing to environmental destruction—leaving farmers and ecosystems to bear the costs. As investors, it’s time to ask: shouldn’t the polluters help fund the transformation? As Pollination Group's "Resilient Farms and Food Supply: Who Foots the Bill?" highlights, we must address the cost of transforming agriculture, but we also need accountability. These companies should face compensation demands for environmental damage, biodiversity taxes, and increased transparency. By raising the cost of capital for companies with negative environmental impacts, we can drive meaningful change and protect long-term investments. It’s time to align capital with a regenerative future for agriculture dont you think? Lets stop being NICE for a bit and address the elephant in the room... :-)

A great report by Pollination- a clear road map that outlines key stages, and provides insightful case studies in real practice. 👨🌾 Regenerative farming- and the direct, collaborative and complex supply chains will continue to have a greater understanding of their role and influence to restoring and enhancing ecosystems rather than simply minimizing harm, making it a powerful approach to sustainable agriculture through ☘ carbon sequestration, ☘soil health, ☘ biodiversity, ☘ food security, ☘water management and ☘ decreased dependency on chemicals. #food #agriculture #carbon #water #biodiversity

We need a reimagining of our food system to one that is value generating for people, ecosystems and the industry. My excellent colleagues have shared insights from our work with global food industry leaders in this latest paper. This is relevant to those navigating the strategic, cost and implementation considerations of transforming our food system. A few key takeaways (and link to the report in comments): • 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: An industrial scale challenge requires landscape level approaches that maximise the benefits of improved practice & ecosystem benefits at scale. • 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: As part of a broader solution set many companies are starting on farm with regenerative agriculture - a place-based, soil-focused and farmer-first philosophy that can create positive economic, ecological and social outcomes. • 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: No single company can do it alone. A landscape approach requires cross-value chain collaboration and partnerships to share the costs, risks & benefits of transition. • 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽: Many companies have made commitments on regen ag, but only 10% have taken the step of committing capital to transition. In addition, the scale of investment needed will require financing partnerships that blend concessional and commercial pools of capital. One of the key focuses across Day 1 of #ClimateWeekNYC events is the transition of the food system in climate action. In line with this crucial theme, our Food and Fibre team has distilled insights from working with industry leaders at various stages of transition and published a white paper that set out a vision for a sustainable future and provides practical steps that food companies can take to finance and achieve successful transitions at scale. Regenerative agriculture can restore nature loss, boost supply chain resilience and support net zero outcomes. But the question is who will pay to deliver the transition? It will take significantly more attention, more investment, more innovation, more hyper-local transformation to decarbonise food and agriculture than the oft referred to sectors like energy, transport, industrials. While those other sectors move at the speed of people and finance, agriculture moves at the speed of nature. Transition is on a season-by-season timeline and we're increasingly running short of time to act. We must build and develop the financial tools, mechanisms, and structures that align the pace of finance with the pace of nature to enable farmers to transition successfully to regenerative agriculture. Based on our extensive work with global food companies we have developed a seven step process enables companies to systematically tackle the challenges and benefit from opportunities generated by the transition.
