From data chaos to cost savings: How a Fortune 50 healthcare firm tamed the dark side (and saved millions). The pharmaceutical industry runs on data. A constant current flows through every stage, from clinical trials to regulatory hurdles and drug development. But within this data stream is a substantial challenge: dark data. Orphaned files, untouched for years, fester in storage, hindering productivity and hiding valuable insights. A recent study revealed 60-85% of unstructured data sits dormant in shared storage systems. The unstructured data growth challenge, coupled with dark data, was putting major risks and brought down productivity at one of the top 5 integrated healthcare services companies globally. They faced different formidable challenges that acted as barriers to their progression. The sprawl in volume of unstructured data caused difficulty in managing and organizing the data efficiently. This presented a number of business risks, such as legal and compliance, and also IT risks—from overloading production systems, backup systems, and HA systems. Legal and compliance issues were huge because the system treated noncritical data as critical, which inefficiently allocated resources and left the company in a very vulnerable position. Further complicating things was a lack of data understanding and lifecycle management, with one-third of their storage infrastructure dedicated to untouched files for five years. This became compounded when it was determined that four-fifths of their files were orphaned. In an effort to address the data sprawl and manage dark data, they partnered with Data Dynamics.
