Programme Development & Insight Lead at Epic Restart Foundation | Lived Experience Council Member at GambleAware
📈 52,370 people called the National Gambling Helpline in 2023 which was a 24% rise from 2022. ⛔ The government are still in the process of updating the existing Gambling Act which means regulations around gambling are not currently aligned with what was proposed in the White Paper they published last year. In simple terms, thousands of people are still suffering harm from addictive products that lack sufficient regulation. 💡 There is also a sound argument that the rise in people reaching out for help and support is attributed to the greater awareness of the treatment options that are available. 🗣 Organisations in the harm prevention sector work tirelessly to ensure our society have the education and tools to seek support if they need it. https://lnkd.in/eZ8Hz__d

The National Gambling Helpline, operated by GamCare and funded by GambleAware is an outstanding and long established support tool. Often supporting people at their very lowest. People broken by their addiction. I can't imagine for one second, why any support and prevention organisation would dissuade its service users from accessing the National Gambling Helpline. However, this is the case on a Greater Manchester Combined Authority website in partnership with Gambling with Lives, and funded by regulatory settlement. Whilst it is encouraging to see a referral pathway, a caveat aimed to cast doubt over a service that has saved thousands upon thousands of lives is offensive, unwelcome and should not be tolerated. Regulatory settlement should not be designed to attack services. I'm not being disingenuous here, this could be the difference between somebody in their darkest hour obtaining help, and thinking the world is against them. Have the convocation, but don't weopanise and stigmatise service to the service user, it is beyond repulsive. The biggest irony about the caveat is it is funded by regulatory settlement, funds from the gambling industry. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Gambling Commission need to address this sort of behaviour urgently.

Gambling and financial harm go hand in hand which is why the Better with Money team underwent training with GamCare to fully understand the implications of gambling on financial wellbeing. There are a number of upcoming sporting events, such as the Olympics and the EUFA cup that might contribute to increased gambling. So it's worth highlighting Gamcare's National Gambling Support Network for anyone who might be seeking support during this time: https://lnkd.in/dq_7Mgaw #BetterWithMoney #FinancialEducation #Debt #Gambling #Addiction
