XCMG unmanned wide-body dump truck The Shenshan open-pit coal mine of Baotou Energy Group of National Energy Group operates XCMG unmanned wide-body vehicles. XCMG is a well-known construction machinery manufacturer, and they have also made some impressive achievements in autonomous driving technology. XCMG has released driverless off-highway wide-body dump trucks. These vehicles can realize multiple driverless functions such as autonomous loading and unloading, tracking driving, and intelligent obstacle avoidance. These technologies have brought global mining operations into a new realm, allowing "smart mines" to move from conception to reality. In addition, XCMG also released a high-end 100-ton smart mine car called "ZNK", which eliminates the cab and realizes driverless driving. This vehicle has excellent performance and environmental features in the field of mining transportation2. XCMG has been committed to the research and development of green mining technology and continues to innovate to create a better future for mine transportation.

Even though robotics news' are filled with new robots and different robot designs, it's easy to forget that robots don't need to look like, well, robots. Adding autonomous operating systems to an existing machine and vehicle is one way to create a robot. In this example, several vehicles with some adjustments and modifications operate autonomously and can still be used as regular, human-operated vehicles. In many cases, the vehicle dynamics are well known and related issues are solved. Keep this in mind for the next time when designing a mobile robot. Thanks for sharing Takayuki Y. While the evolution of Autonomous machines in mining has been underway for almost 2 decades, other off-road industries like #construction and #quarry have only recently warmed up to its potential. It's great to see several technology players emerge over the last few years to serve these industries with remote control, #robotic, and #selfdriving solutions that tackle their unique use cases and needs. Autonomous trucks: opportunity or threat?   Autonomous vehicles in long-range transportation still seem like a far future, but we see more and more examples of their implementation in real life. Some of them, however, raise concerns not only about #safety, but also about workers' #rights.   Those concerns are easily visible in the current events happening in the Permian Basin oil field, Texas, where truck #drivers are protesting against poor wages and difficult working conditions (primarily, lack of access to toilets). Their demands for improvement may not meet with agreement because of the new, innovative project launched by Atlas Energy Solutions, a company responsible for resource transportation in the area. In light of recent protests, Atlas Energy Solutions tested an autonomous truck Kenworth T680, equipped with Kodiak Driver system, which completed its first 34-kilometer-long ride with no driver in a cabin. It was possible because of the character of operations in the Permian Basin – the truck traveled on private roads, with low speed. The company reasons its decision with the area's harsh environment, believing autonomous #vehicles will do better in the climate of sandstorms and desert heat waves.   While autonomous trucks promise greater #efficiency, in my opinion, the move could further marginalize the workforce. This technological shift risks not just the displacement of skilled workers but also raises significant safety and reliability concerns in the short term. The reliance on unproven #technology as a quick fix for deep-rooted labor issues may not be the #sustainable solution it appears to be.
