This Buildings & Cities special issue explores (often invisibile) practices, politics & power implications of data-driven buildings & cities. Guest editors Andrew Karvonen & Tom Hargreaves identify key emerging themes in their editorial: • societal exclusion is often commonplace in datafication • local geographies and histories can provide a strong corrective to the universalising quantitative abstractions of most datafication processes. The use of qualitative approaches is vital • civil society needs to be included in the development of new visions and alternatives that can dismantle existing unjust power structures & focus on social justice. Poverty and Misplaced Prioritisation: Evaluating 'Human Models' and 'Value Systems in African Societies' Poverty in African societies is influenced by cultural and societal frameworks, notably 'human models' and 'value systems.' Traditional human models emphasized communal values and wisdom, but modern influences increasingly prioritize material success and individualism. This shift can lead to short-term financial gains being valued over long-term sustainable development. Traditional value systems focused on collective well-being and sustainability, but capitalist values have introduced competition and consumerism. This often results in insufficient investment in essential areas like education and healthcare, exacerbating poverty and inequality. Misplaced prioritization driven by the pursuit of status and wealth can divert attention from essential community needs. Governance challenges, such as corruption, further hinder economic development and erode trust in institutions. Addressing poverty requires harmonizing traditional values with contemporary aspirations, promoting communal well-being, ethical leadership, and sustainable development. Inclusive economic policies that invest in human capital and social services are essential. By realigning human models and value systems, African societies can create a foundation for sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
