Creative Web Developer | Specialist in React, Next.js, and WordPress | Passionate about Building Engaging User Experiences Through the Lens of Culture and Tech
🌏 I recently spent 3 months in Bangkok, Thailand, doing an internship that challenged my perspectives in unexpected ways. 💡 I got asked, “You’ve been an engineer for 4 years, isn’t that demoting yourself?” In a world where we, people in tech, are always striving for more—be it pay, equity, or equality—it was kind of nice to actually get less for a change. Let me contextualize this by saying that I chose Thailand because I have family there, and it was a great opportunity to connect with a culture I hadn’t fully experienced growing up. I have thoughts on my entire trip as a whole, and I’ll save that for a Medium post. But I wanted to share a few things I learned while stepping back and being an intern: 1️⃣ I was able to explore other disciplines. I went in as a Developer Intern but soon realized my strengths lay in Project Management, which I was able to explore more deeply. 2️⃣ In North America, we often take our work culture and privileges for granted. It was humbling to be a female developer in a culture that doesn’t prioritize women in tech. 3️⃣ Stepping back also allowed me to reconnect with the joy of learning. As a professional, it’s easy to get caught up in the grind. Experiencing my first internship in tech was especially eye-opening—it reminded me why I fell in love with this field in the first place: the endless opportunities to learn and grow. This experience has given me fresh insights and renewed appreciation for my career path. Sometimes, stepping back can be the most empowering step forward. It's not about the title or the paycheck, but about the growth, learning, and self-discovery. Looking forward to sharing more in my upcoming Medium post! ✨ #CareerGrowth #InternationalExperience #WomenInTech #PersonalDevelopment

Exploring different corporate cultures can be highly rewarding but also challenging, especially when navigating the contrasts between Eastern and Western work environments. Here are five key differences that you may encounter during your internship abroad. 1. While Western offices typically maintain a professional distance among employees, many Asian cultures value building close, personal relationships at work. 2. In Western workplaces, direct criticism is often seen as a way to improve performance, but in Chinese culture, criticism is handled delicately to avoid public embarrassment, aligning with the concept of “saving face.” 3. Punctuality is important in both regions, yet in Asia, lateness may be more easily forgiven if there’s a reasonable explanation. 4. Asking questions in the West is common and encouraged, whereas in many Asian settings, employees might hesitate to question superiors for fear of appearing confrontational or disrespectful. 5. Authority and hierarchical structures are more pronounced in Asia, where seniority dictates interactions far more than in the West's typically flatter organizational structures. For more insights on these differences and experiences from past interns, check out our blog. CEO at Skilio - Helping startups & SMEs build an intern army to optimise cost & expand their business
Honestly, I have never thought the work I do can change lives. It started with an intention to better support students in Southeast Asia to better prepare for the school-to-work transition. But when we started to receive messages from our students of how much a simple opportunity helped unlock new possibilities for them, we knew that we have to double down on this in order to scale the impact. Truth to be told, we didn’t get it all right. We had cases of poor work performance by students, students missing their interview time because of timezone differences and so on. When we look at those behaviours, it’s easy to just give up on them and not care. However, what we found out is that systemic issues like the environment they grew up in oftentimes shape them to do what they do. And it takes time for us to remind and teach them what it takes to thrive in an international environment. Not forgetting the support of our employer partners who are super supportive and nurturing so we can create a mindset shift in the students we work with. There are tons of students out there living in 2nd and 3rd tier cities who have limited access to global opportunities that we have not yet been able to reach. I call on anyone who work with such students and also employers who are willing to give a chance to these students to collaborate with us on our remote internship programme. Together, we can create a better world for our youth in the region! :)

During my stay in Barcelona with CIS Abroad - Center for International Studies, I was in charge of rebranding eRoots Analytics, an energy consulting startup with projects across the globe. With the help of my coworkers and supervisor, I was able to get a survey of this dynamic and growing sector along with a peek at the inner workings of the international business world. Designing a visual scheme for a truly global market was a unique design challenge. What associations do certain colors have in world cultures besides your own? Will key messages and phrases translate smoothly into different languages? What tools and platforms do businesses use to communicate on an international scale? All of these questions factor into the fundamental design choices behind the company’s new image. After the planning was complete and the groundwork was laid, the time came to execute the ideas. The assets needed to be suited to online and print media, which required a versatile knowledge of different standards and tools - especially doing it as a one-man team! Throughout the process, it was critical to consult with the client and iterate upon ideas to arrive at a satisfactory final product. Insights from my multicultural team of coworkers brought ideas and associations to my attention that I never would have reached from my perspective alone. You can read more about the design process and see the journey on my website: https://lnkd.in/eJR_w7Cy Even though it can seem daunting at first, an internship abroad was a great experience for me and I would recommend it to anyone with the opportunity to go!

While planning ahead the content calendar around awareness days, I noticed that yesterday (25 July) was National Intern Day. Interestingly, it reminded me that 20 years ago this time, I was doing my internship with the political desk of a newspaper in Hong Kong, covering election news, before pivoting to the world of communications and PR. Reflecting on my journey over the years, I've worked in various industries and regions, but some principles have remained valid regardless of time and place: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 🔍. It pushes me to adapt in a constantly evolving world and inspires creativity. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 🌿. In the fast-paced nature of communications, it's easy to overload ourselves until we burn out. Achieving work-life balance has been crucial for the sustainability of this career. Summer has (finally) arrived! Wishing everyone a good time, until we catch up with more great ideas for the new academic term. 😉 📸: Me having fun kayaking along the tidal Thames, enjoying the 'life' part of work-life balance.
