🔑A website doesn’t know your learners It was my first coaching session with a new instructional coaching client who was serious about the success of the learners in her school’s music program, but knew that there were some students who just weren’t engaging. When asked to tell me about her students, she told me about the racial/ethnic breakdown of her students, about the large number of multilingual students, and students with IEPs. She also told me about some of the discipline problems she was experiencing, and the things she had tried that weren’t working. She told me information about her students that frankly, I could have learned myself from reading the demographic information on the school website. So does that mean that I know her kids? Of course not! She had done her due diligence as far as reading IEPs and noticing the diversity of learners she was working with, but she had stopped there. Thinking that understanding the surface level information about your school community and students means that you know your students, is a common mistake that music educators make when they’re seeking to implement culturally responsive practices. Knowing your students is so much more than what you can glean from a demographic report or even an IEP. Spending EYPP funding on music training and resources. I propose that Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) should be invested to fill the huge gap in early years workforce and parents music confidence knowledge and practice. A wealth of neuroscience and research evidence shows us that a rich and varied, daily music and movement provision in early years, has significant potential to support development of children aged 3-4 years, in a way that will contribute to closing the school ready attainment gap. Children who are 3 and 4 and, who meet the eligibility criteria, are EYPP funded at a rate of approximately £350 per year. The Early Years Pupil Premium aims to help by providing: 1. Extra training for staff 2. Support for developing children's speech and language and learning 3. Greater links between the early education setting and families 4. Further opportunities and experiences to prepare children with starting school Early years education providers will have to effectively demonstrate to Ofsted how funds have been used to improve children's education. Many early years settings spend their EYPP funding on Boogie Mites music training and resources, because it ticks all 4 objectives in a most efficient and effective way, for the benefit of children's school readiness. It also upskills and boosts wellbeing of all staff, for the benefit of future cohorts of children. It also provides a vehicle for parent involvement and home learning that could continue through school. Feedback that we receive shows that our customers can provide Ofsted with all the evidence that they need to show how children's education has been improved. In the words of acclaimed scientist Andrew Huberman, "Getting kids to play an instrument improves their ability to learn all sorts of things for their entire life." This statement resonates deeply with my own experiences and professional insights. Music education is often relegated to the realm of entertainment and performance. However, it's crucial to recognize its role in cognitive development, skill acquisition, and academic performance. He emphasizes, "If you want [kids] to be truly good in math and science, you also have them play instruments." As a professional drummer and speech-language pathologist, I've experienced firsthand how mastering an instrument is not just about being a performer or an entertainer. Learning music taught me the value of practice, discipline, and delayed gratification – skills that were instrumental in my journey through graduate school and beyond. This isn't just my story. It's a narrative that underscores the developmental cascade effects of music education. It's about enhancing cognitive skills and teaching how to learn and interact effectively – beyond the confines of a classroom or stage. Although I don’t play drums in wine caves very often, playing drums is part of my daily routine for physical, mental, and creative well being (a special thanks to White Rock Vineyard for inviting me to play here!).
