A sustainable future for Orbost: Hemp as a strategic alternative??
Kudos to our friends at #Colere for their work on the Future of Orbost. The ending of logging presents a tough economic challenge, yet it also opens the door to innovative, sustainable solutions.
One particularly promising solution is the burgeoning #hemp industry, in our opinion. Hemp, closely related to cannabis, is a versatile and sustainable crop with a #minimal #environmental footprint.
#Colere, here’s how we think hemp could be a key player for Orbost, supported by compelling data:
#Versatility
Hemp is remarkably productive, with a single hectare of some varieties yielding 10-25 tonnes of dry stem #fibre, making it an excellent resource for textiles, construction materials, and bioplastics. Moreover, hemp seeds are nutritional gems, offering over 30% oil content rich in essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, presenting another lucrative agricultural opportunity for the region.
#Sustainability
Hemp cultivation is environmentally friendly, requiring up to 50% less #water than cotton and thriving in diverse climates. It enhances #soil #health, which could greatly benefit Gippsland’s farming landscape.
#Carbon #sequestration
Hemp tops in absorbing CO2, with the potential to sequester up to 15 tonnes per hectare annually, offering a dual benefit of climate change mitigation and economic revitalisation.
#Job #creation
The hemp industry can significantly boost employment, potentially offering 2-3 times more jobs per hectare than traditional crops like cotton, which could help compensate for job losses in the logging sector and invigorate Orbost’s economy.
Some areas still need to be explored to maximise hemp's potential including establishing processing capabilities and understanding market demands within Victoria. Hemp’s integration into Orbost’s agricultural scene can be highly valuable, necessitating collaboration among #Colere, the Orbost & #District #Chamber of #Commerce, hemp #breeding companies and local #growers to explore this promising avenue.
We are eager to discuss how hemp can play a role in shaping a sustainable future for Orbost.
Feel free to connect to discuss.

What is Colere working on this week?
The abrupt end to native logging in Victoria has had a profound impact on the East Gippsland region, with many jobs and businesses disappearing and the district struggling to find a way keep families in towns like Orbost. The Future of Orbost and District project is an initiative of the Orbost & District Chamber of Commerce & Industry with support from the Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions. The working group commissioned Colere to investigate and develop a strategic plan to support sectors such as Agribusiness, Ecotourism and Education, and build a better future for the region.
Our planning and development process was a combination of interviews with stakeholders, a deep dive into the economic and social drivers in the region and back and forth consultation with the client. We are very proud of the result we have produced and present findings this week. We know that the report alone will do little for many of those that have lost their livelihoods, however we hope that it can be the start of a renewal that will ultimately result in a bright, sustainable future for Orbost and other districts of East Gippsland.
