#ThursdayThoughts 💡 What are learning space pilot programs, and what are the benefits of these experiences? "A learning spaces pilot experience tests spatial designs for classrooms. Successful programs generally are a semester in length and can involve numerous classrooms. The pilot aims to test furniture, flooring, lighting, color palettes, whiteboards, and technology, as well as understand teacher and student behaviors in the space, preferences for specific aspects of the designs, and how multiple designs impact the teaching and learning experience." Schools that engage in a pilot experience develop a deep understanding of what works and what doesn’t. Classroom redesign is expensive, so pilot programs help schools be wise stewards of their finances. Also, the decisions made about classroom design impact decades of use - it’s critical to get the right information to make the right decisions." Schools are not just collections of buildings; they are environments where learning thrives and students come together. Yet, when spaces within schools are disconnected, it creates a physical and emotional divide that can subtly affect how students experience education. In the 'before' image, the space between the intermediate school and the library is underutilized, with limited natural light and no real connection between the two buildings. This design left both students and teachers feeling isolated from the outdoor environment and each other. In the 'after' image, a simple yet effective change makes a world of difference. The new trellis and outdoor learning area bridge the gap, creating a vibrant space where students can interact, collaborate, and engage with nature. By incorporating large windows and open doors, natural light now fills the interior spaces, enhancing both the learning environment and the overall atmosphere. This transformation shows how even small design improvements can lead to a more connected, welcoming school experience that encourages collaboration, well-being, and deeper engagement with the surroundings. To explore more about how thoughtful school design can enhance student outcomes, check out our new book, Building Minds: Designing Learning Spaces for Connection and Coherence, published by A4LE-Association for Learning Environments. Flexibility should support users, not overwhelm them. The Ohio State University's Riffe Building classroom can hold 150 people for large lectures and events. Folding partitions and movable furniture allow the space to be adapted for different lesson types and smaller groups. A distinct carpet pattern was designed to indicate where tables and seating can be places for various room layouts to allow any user to adjust the space for their needs. New entries to the classroom and library improve pedestrian traffic and reduce noise distractions. And new private study and conference rooms maintain a balance between group collaboration and private work, increasing the usability of the open library. The renovation was featured in The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy's Decade of Achievement. The space has become a preferred active learning classroom and is a benchmark for innovative learning environments. #EnvironmentsThatWork #AcademicInnovation #FlexibleDesign

Think Calm! It is quite interesting that the generation of kids in High School right now, are the first generation to grow up completely connected, and online. Equally interesting, and concerning that those same kids say that stress and anxiety are major problems for students today. Perhaps these things are connected, and perhaps not. That is a whole other research study. What we do know is that our kids are stressed out more than ever before, and are spending a third of their waking hours, or more, in school. Those of us with honor and responsibility of helping to create learning spaces need to be focusing on student and teacher well being. Spaces like this calming room that my friends at Smith System® put together are amazing. What is so cool though is that by using very agile furniture in all corners of the school, and then including some of these calming elements, spaces like this don't have to be hidden away. They can be embedded into almost any classroom or area of a learning space. Calming spaces should be available to all! We need to focus always on empowering students and teachers to be healthy, happy, and amazing! #education #teaching #learning #innovation #future #design

The quest for perfectly decorated classrooms, fueled by social media, can overwhelm teachers, especially new ones. The focus on creating visually stunning spaces often detracts from meaningful connections with students and effective teaching. Hyper-decorated classrooms, while visually impressive, do little to enhance learning and require unsustainable levels of time, effort, and financial resources. Effective learning environments prioritize flexibility and functionality, using cohesive color palettes, maximizing natural light, and providing space for movement and adaptability. These classrooms support collaboration, creativity, and quiet reflection, meeting diverse student needs. By setting clear priorities, emphasizing instructional quality over aesthetic appeal, and providing professional development on research-based design, school leaders can reduce this pressure. New teachers should start by involving students in the design process and prioritizing learning over decoration. Overall, we should aim to shift from aesthetic perfection to student-centered design and encourage sharing these on social media to break the cycle of decoration perfection. #Education #ClassroomDesign #TeacherWellbeing #StudentCenteredLearning #EdTech Robert Dillon
