Small & Mighty | Our products come in all shapes and sizes.. Occasionally we get some contrasting items making their way through our Production Teams, this month we have seen both “Small and Mighty” crates which have caught our eye. Here we have Supervisor, Chaney Doherty and Ivan Avreyski (6’5 tall), from our Product Assembly Team, both sizing up the crates in one of our manufacturing areas. Destined for the “Energy Industry” and at 8m long, it is one of largest items on our books. (although we can make them even bigger) In contrast: At just 49cm x 35cm, Chaney is standing on one of the smaller Riveted Cases which is used in the “Heavy Automotive industry” and despite its size it protects the contents perfectly. These items demonstrate our broad range of products and capability, where strength and reliability are important factors when moving valuable or fragile items. Reflecting forward It doesn’t seem possible that Sumitomo (SHI) Demag UK is 50 years old this year, in truth, it’s more like 70 years old, as we started out as an agency in 1957! It's quite a feat just how old we are, considering less than 1.3% of UK companies have been trading for 50 years or more. Age aside, the company has gone through some pretty impressive transformations over the years. Now, many people talk about all the amazing stuff their company has done when celebrating big milestones like this. Their innovations and products. But, in my humble opinion, I think the mishaps and challenging scenarios are where real transformation occurs. And that, by working as a team, seemingly impossible scenarios become possible. Queue the example… A customer had a machine, the DDV850, better known as the ‘Jolly Green Giant’. It was one of only two machines ever made that had an 8,500 kn vertical clamp unit and three injection units arranged in a star at the base. The machine was used to produce Metro rear light clusters and we’d been asked to convert the pressure cushion lock (if you know, you know) to a toggle lock. This involved: -      Removing the roof of the factory -      Extracting the tie bars vertically -      Rebuilding the toggle system at a height of 4 metres above the workshop floor -      All while under a very tight "automotive" project timeline. And we did it! Obviously. This would be a pretty awful story if we hadn’t. In these moments, when I reflect back on how our team adapts to new challenges, I’m reminded of how proud I am to be a part of it. Now, anytime we encounter scenarios that require a flexibility and imagination, I remember that there’s a reason we’re in that 1.3%.
