In June 2023, Upside Foods and Eat Just achieved U.S. regulatory approval for their cultivated chicken products, marking a historic milestone. However, the industry faces challenges such as limited access to capital and political roadblocks. Governments worldwide are investing in research and development for cultivated meat, but access to capital remains a key hurdle. Despite setbacks, dozens of other cultivated meat applications are under review, and companies are moving into production facilities, indicating continued progress. For more details, you can refer to the full article published on June 28! 🚨Is British beef green??🚨Spoiler: No. British beef causes about 14-18 times more emissions than beans per 100g protein, on average. According to FAO GLEAM figures, most British beef is around 9-12kgCO2eq per 100g protein. I've plotted this onto the diagram below, which represents the average emissions intensities of different foods globally, from one of the most comprehensive studies on this ever conducted, Poore and Namecek. As you can see, British beef still comes out as higher emitting than even most pork and chicken - and hugely more emitting than tofu, beans, pulses and nuts. So yes, British beef is lower emitting than much imported beef. But even the lowest emitting British beef has far far higher emissions than almost any other food type. This doesn't even factor in carbon opportunity cost of using land for grazing which could be reforested, or restored to wild grasslands or wetlands which tend to store more carbon. Note that I'm pretty sure the 9-12kgCO2eq figure is for beef from UK dairy herds (I'm trying to verify this) - and although 64% of the UK’s cattle are dairy herds, the other 36% is from beef herds, which typically have considerably higher emission per 100g protein. I'm still trying to get to bottom of what emissions of beef from UK beef herds is. A CCC document put the figure at around DOUBLE that of beef from UK dairy herds. The main reason dairy herds look lower emitting per 100g protein is because they produce milk, there's more food produced per cow. Why the cell-cultivated meat industry needs to change consumer perceptions Despite all of this, 60% of those polled also said they either definitely or probably wouldn’t even try cell-cultivated meat (the term the industry prefers over the survey’s lab-grown meat, the one that doesn’t rely on cruelty and is gradually making the planet less habitable. 🌾💧 Water Impact in Food Production: Did you know that the food and beverage industry is a major driver of water-related impacts? From growing crops to processing ingredients, the water footprint is significant. The image below illustrates the gallons of water required to produce one pound of various foods. 🥩Beef as a food item has the largest global water footprint! It takes approximately 1,847 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef — that’s enough water to fill 39 bathtubs all the way to the top.😰 But how?? Producing animal products like meat, dairy, and eggs requires significantly more water than fruits (115 gallons per pound) and vegetables (39 gallons per pound) because of the large volume of water needed for the animal's sustenance.🐮 These figures help us to make more conscious choices about our food practice, allowing us to have better control of our water footprint. #WaterSustainability #FoodIndustry #CSRD #WaterConsumption #WaterFootprint Water Footprint Network

“Meat could go one of two ways: Cultivated meat could sputter out. Livestock’s effects on our health and the environment could drive up its costs. We in the rich world could have to return to a time when we ate meat for special occasions, as millions of others still do, because they can only rarely afford it. Or the new factory-farmed meat could take off. In this future, our supermarket meat counters could offer bioreactor beef alongside a grass-fed option. And in that future, we would have to confront some new meaty questions. Will we still sacrifice a goat to praise our gods? Is a Sunday roast still special if there’s no skin and bone? Who will get to bite into what kind of meat? How will we make sense of the flesh on our plates?” https://lnkd.in/er-FXGxy

📢 The Ochra-V MAX, from our VICAM product portfolio, has received the Overall Food Quality Solution Of The Year award from AgTech Breakthrough! This product enables field-based access to monitor cocoa quality, ensuring consumer safety and allowing early access to regulatory compliance data for ochratoxin in cocoa powder. "Ochra-V™ MAX answers one of today’s toughest food safety challenges with a unique approach to lateral flow strip testing for ochratoxin A. Virtually all crops cultivated in an orchard, field, or vineyard are susceptible to mycotoxins, and Ochratoxin A is a toxin produced by naturally occurring molds that inhabit vineyard, field, and orchard grown crops. This includes cacao, the source of the world’s most sought-after chocolate confections,” said Bryan Vaughn, Managing Director, AgTech Breakthrough.
