There is an undoubted human need to show affinity with, or avoid being embarrassed by, someone perceived as more expert or knowledgeable, arguably much more apparent among the affluent. It also shows that when we buy wine, we "buy into" prestige, in other words, where we buy says as much about us as what we buy.
