Is the "small family farm" really what it seems? FACT was very pleased to a guest blog post from Thom Norman at FarmKind. He debunks the romanticized image of small farms, showing us the reality of industrial-scale animal agriculture that dominates U.S. food production. This highlights the need to face the truth about modern American agriculture and question the industry's misleading narratives.

My compassion for animals and human health ignited my vegan lifestyle 7 years ago, but my other passions and interests really do wonders in keeping me so engaged (/enraged) - especially when it comes to my interest in data analytics. I mean, some of the most fascinating (/frustrating) data points are directly related to this very topic. Like how in the U.S., "the largest 2.6% of farms are responsible for a staggering 98% of animal production." In the time since you started reading this post, over 3 THOUSAND animals have died for food in the United States alone. Pairing this with this research tells us that a very high percentage of those thousands of animals have died within those 2.6% largest farms. That's not good news for anyone, and this consolidation, which has "accelerated dramatically over the past half-century," is not even going to be sustainable for those large farms themselves. As the research further highlights, "the concentration of animal agriculture into fewer, larger operations carries severe implications for our environment, public health, and rural communities." The situation that we've gotten ourselves into when it comes to how we feed ourselves is not sustainable from any angle. Not economically, not environmentally, not morally and not logically. The good news here is that we actually have more power here as consumers than we do with nearly any other industry. In this profit-driven system that we live in, we vote with our dollar every single day. Let's show them how much we care about our planetary longevity. I encourage you to follow pages like this on LinkedIn, and maybe even try the vegan option at the next restaurant you go to (or better yet, check out your local vegan establishment). Of course there's so much more that we can do as individuals, and our imagination really is our limit with how we can contribute to this shift. As beings with "dominion" over this planet (and especially as Americans), I believe we have an obligation to educate ourselves on the reality of our impact on not just the planet itself, but the treatment of the beings with whom we share this space. Surround yourself with the truth, because the truth will set us all free.

We applaud The Transfarmation Project for their crucial work in supporting farmers transitioning from industrial animal agriculture (read: CAFOs) to crop production for human consumption. The coverage they are receiving is truly well deserved. One aspect not highlighted in the article is the intense suffering experienced by animals in industrial farming operations and the profound impact this suffering can have on farmers themselves. Transitioning to growing mushrooms is a much more compassionate and sustainable choice for all involved. Kudos to Tyler Whitley and the entire team for their dedication to this vital cause. https://lnkd.in/eRSm73tm

🚜 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘃𝘀. 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 🌾 When we think of farming, many of us think of the idyllic image of small, family-run farms, red barns, and rolling green fields. But the reality of modern farming in the US could not be further from this picture. In my article for Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), I explore FarmKind's new research breaking down the stark contrast between public perception and the reality of industrial-scale modern animal agriculture. While small farms make up 78% of total operations, they raise just 0.1% of the country’s animals. Meanwhile, 2.6% of megafarms produce a staggering 98% of the animals we consume. This shift has major implications for: 🌍 The environment 🏥 Public health 🏡 Rural communities But there’s hope. By supporting efforts to improve welfare standards, encouraging plant-based alternatives, and raising awareness, we can begin to unravel the dominance of factory farming. Take a moment to read my article and discover how you can be part of the solution. https://lnkd.in/ebKECh8k Thanks again to Bryant Research and Chris Bryant for partnering with us on this research.

Empowering Kabubbu’s farmers, local farmers benefit by selling their corn to #kabubbumaizemill, which is then processed into high-quality animal feed like broken chicken feed. We also provide essential services to chicken farmers, processing their own corn into nutritious feed. Advocacy (my own opinion, not that of my employer). From the Animal Welfare Institute "In the United States, most meat, dairy, and eggs come from massive factory farms that are harmful to both animals and farmers. To provide a future beyond these mega-farms, Rep. Alma Adams (D-NC), Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) have introduced the Industrial Agriculture Conversion Act. This bill would establish a grant program to help farmers modify their operations to provide animals with access to the outdoors and enrichment, or convert their facilities entirely to produce organic or specialty crops. Join AWI and over 100 organizations in encouraging members of Congress to cosponsor this legislation and advocate its inclusion in the Farm Bill." #sustainability #ethics #farms #policy
