There's a good article today from FoodPrint about the recent USDA label guidelines that we've been talking about at FACT. "The most important thing to understand is that the new guidelines are not rules, and they don’t provide definitions or standards for the claims that companies make on labels." There is often a lot of criticism that there are too many regulations out there. From what we have seen there are very few strict regulations in the food sector, and even when attempts are made to help consumers understand what they are buying, pressure from industrial agriculture often weakens those efforts. "That lack of enforcement is particularly glaring with antibiotic-related claims. While the rules around what companies can say about their antibiotic use practices are fairly tight — “no antibiotics ever,” for example, is actually supposed to mean no antibiotics were ever given to the animal — there’s no guarantee that the claim is accurate without testing and verification." We are working with allies to make these claims clearer and to urge the USDA to make rules that help make the food you buy more transparent. Read on for more details, and share it with others so that people understand all the complexities of this system.

For some standards, such as free-range, the USDA sets a standard and asks companies for evidence of compliance. But enforcement is patchy, and the USDA has in the past accepted applications with little or no substantiation. For others, the USDA sets no standards at all. The labels on milk and yogurt are the purview of the FDA, not the USDA. And the FDA holds that it has no role in validating animal-raising claims. As far as the federal government is concerned, when it comes to milk and the cows that produce it, anyone can claim almost anything. https://lnkd.in/eDk4nnT2

I just completed an analysis of USDA's Recommended Decision. USDA is basically proposing to do three things. First, increase make allowances. Second, tweek pricing formulas for protein and Class I and II milk. Third, raise Class I differentials and change location adjustments. They also agreed to a new innovative Class I pricing formula for extended shelf life milk (ESL). So, what does it all mean? What impact will it have on farmers, processors, and consumers? I tried to address these issues in my report which you can find here: https://lnkd.in/gFKYRvBv

"The Food Date Labeling Act (S.1484 | H.R.3159), which would standardize and simplify date labels across the United States, has been on the Congressional docket for the last five years. The research is clear. We have at our fingertips a proven, simple, and cost-effective solution: standardize the date label phrases used on food. It’s time to stop talking about confusing date labels and time to fix the problem." Frank Yianna, Former Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy & Response at the FDA, writes in Agri-Pulse Communications; "It’s time to finally clear up food date label confusion for consumers" Read: https://lnkd.in/emhNKhQE
