VP, International Government & Regulatory Affairs (opinions expressed are mine and not those of my employer)
This week I will be speaking at @DIA 2024 on the topic, “Breaking Boundaries: Overcoming Policy Crosstalk and Globalization Barriers to Foster Innovation” with Virginia Acha, Karen Noonan and Duane Schulthess. My comments will share a case study on taking a data-driven approach to strengthening the resiliency of the global medicines supply chain. Healthcare leaders share a desire to see innovation in treatments and prevention to address the many unmet needs of patients. Successful public policies must be based on data and science. In the case of supply chains, pharmacopeial standards, built on rigorous science and recognized by regulators globally, can provide a foundation for industry to operate with a higher degree of certainty and confidence. I hope you’re able to attend this DIA session, but I also invite you to read and share the latest @US Pharmacopeia Drug Shortages Report to encourage comprehensive action to strengthen global regulatory frameworks: https://lnkd.in/ehg7_fJv

Articulating Added Value in Clinical Trials 🔬 At our clinics, we bring unmatched value to our clients and partners by maintaining complete control over our data and protocols. By owning and operating our clinics, we manage everything in-house—from protocol development by our science team to the execution of the trials. This minimizes external noise and variability, ensuring consistent and reliable data. Why does this matter? For functional foods, where effect sizes are often small, this consistency is crucial. By eliminating external variations, we ensure that the data remains consistent and reliable, ultimately providing our clients with more precise and beneficial trial outcomes. Trust in our process, rely on our results. #ClinicalTrials #FunctionalFoods #DataIntegrity #Research #Science #HealthcareInnovation #Atlantia

✨ A big thank you to the Medtech & Pharma Platform Association Annual Conference organizers for a fantastic day yesterday! I'm still processing all the valuable insights and will pull my notes together for a more in-depth post or blog in the coming days. For now, I'll share one key takeaway from an insightful exchange on determining the primary mode of action for combination products: 🔹 Be honest with yourself—are you genuinely uncertain or hoping for a particular answer? If it is genuinely borderline and you are indeed unsure: - Gather all the evidence, including test data (possibly animal studies) - Research relevant literature and identify any analogs to guide your thinking. - Engage regulatory bodies with this data before you get too far down the road. Their processes are all slightly different, but they have a way to answer a question like "Is this a medicinal product?" 🔹 The discussion featured a great panel with representatives from the EMA, FDA, Swissmedic, and Notified Bodies who shared stories of companies choosing the regulatory path they wanted only to have their product pulled from the market for being incorrectly classified or being forced to change paths at the eleventh hour—adding massive delays, extra effort, and significant cost. 🔹 Transparency is critical—share all relevant information with regulatory agencies to ensure a smoother conversation. They'll find it eventually, anyway! I look forward to diving deeper into more discussions from the conference soon! #CombinationProducts #RegulatoryAffairs #HealthcareInnovation #MPP2024

Had a wonderful time (as always) at the Oregon Bioscience Incubator and OTRADI monthly meetup last night. It was an especially informative session thanks to the panel discussion on Bioethics and Healthcare Decisions. A very engaged and thoughtful discussion with doctors Ruchi Thanawala, Murtaza Batla and William Hersh, MD. A key observation for me was the challenge practitioners face today as patients (admirably) do research to be better informed. In today's information age, practitioners encounter three main types of information when interacting with patients: * Information - True facts * Misinformation - Well-intentioned, but incorrect information * Disinformation - False facts spread on purpose I imagine it is especially challenging here in the U.S. where we are one of just two countries which allow direct-to-consumer drug ads on t.v. and other media. Do the people who see those ads critically evaluate them, comparing the improvements over a placebo? Add to that the misinformation and disinformation on the web and I can see it straining the ability of the provider to do the best for their patient. While the interplay of information trio is not unique to healthcare, its direct impact on patient health significantly heightens the challenge.

The rise of GLP-1 medications offers an exciting opportunity in the food industry, especially for developing supportive nutrition solutions. These medications have shown promise in weight management, but they come with side effects and challenges, such as weight regain after discontinuation. GLP-1s are here to stay and the only way to help people achieve lasting health will not be solely through pills or injections, but through healthy food and lifestyle....challenge accepted #foodasmedicine The NOURISH Movement Clareo
GLP-1s are taking the world by storm (for good reasons), but they’re an imperfect solution for consumers and payors alike, and have potential to bankrupt our #healthcare system. Their rise should catalyze the #foodismedicine movement and accelerate private sector innovation. Last week we unveiled our Case for Action for Food as Medicine in a GLP-1 World — highlighting the four pathways for food as medicine approaches. Innovation is happening, but we see “signals in the silos” of health and food. We believe that better collaboration is needed to: 🤝 Connect healthcare innovators with food innovators 🤝 Connect interventions with empowerment and sustainable change 🤝 Connect products with programs and payment models 🤝 Accelerate design, development and delivery of food innovations Scroll through the Case for Action highlights and tell us where you see the opportunities for #innovation and #collaboration and how you’d like to become involved. We’re going deeper on the challenges and opportunities and will be hosting a multi-stakeholder Innovation Sprint this fall designed to accelerate innovation and creative partnering. More to come!
