Great to see an article on the importance of culturally relevant food! https://lnkd.in/g5QmeiM7 We recognize how vital culturally relevant foods are and prioritize getting the right foods to the right communities. We do this in a number of ways, including diversifying our food streams, from growers, to food donor partners, to purchases we make, and by investing in community-led hunger solutions. We continue to listen and learn from our clients and agency partners to understand which foods are most desired. We believe everyone deserves food that enables them not just to survive, but to fully thrive.

Today is #WorldFoodDay, an annual reminder that food insecurity and malnourishment remain a widespread issue. S:US remains steadfast in addressing food insecurity in New York City. Last year, we harvested an estimated 10,200 lbs. of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and honey from our farm and garden network. This year, we continued to expand our efforts by launching a new community fridge in the Bronx, ensuring that no New Yorker faces hunger. Our white paper, “Uniting on Food Justice: An Innovative Approach from a Health and Human Service Organization,” highlights the significant connection between food insecurity and wellness, emphasizing how the lack of access to nutritious food can worsen chronic conditions and mental health. By integrating food justice into our services, we aim to reduce the disparities in access to healthy food for the people we serve. Meet Itsa, the Associate Director of Equity, People and Administration at Oregon Food Bank. “Oregon Food Bank has made internal changes to continue to put the community that we serve at the forefront and to make them the priority. That really speaks to our mission. If we’re serving a community, and our goal is to be community-oriented, we need to lead with actions and not just words. Oregon Food Bank does that, and it’s a really beautiful thing.” Itsa’s story reminds us that food justice centers people in their daily, lived experience. It means that communities have power over our own food systems and that we are able to make decisions about what we grow, produce, distribute and consume. When we envision communities who never know hunger, we envision communities who can access food with safety and dignity. The Food for All Oregonians campaign envisions an Oregon where all people have access to food no matter where we’re born. Get involved this Hunger Action Month with Food for All Oregonians to increase food access. FoodForAllOR.org/Pledge.

#FoodJustice isn't just about physical access to #groceries, though that is a huge part of it, it's also about practical / financial access. As #inflation begins to slow and normalize, why is it our food prices haven't followed suit? Check out the latest blog post by Marquise Dockery here at Replate, and how groundbreaking laws like California's #SB1383 are hoping to address food insecurity and waste. https://lnkd.in/gQKaXeJg

Buying and eating local food is better for your health and for the health of our community, but it’s not always as easy as a quick run to your nearest grocery store. Right now it’s easier than ever, as Western New York is at the height of our harvest season. Farmer’s markets abound with local food options, and it’s a great way to meet the farmers and producers and ask them how you can shop locally in the off-season. Eat Local WNY offers a number of resources on their website to help you track down local food. It also offers a local food pledge, created to help encourage WNYers to increase their consumption of local food by just 10% this year. To learn more about local food availability, access and benefits, to hear more stories from the local food community, or to take the Eat Local WNY Food Pledge, visit eatlocalwny.org.

7moI was just talking to some of my coworkers about the link between food insecurity and mental health. Love that other minds are thinking similar things. It is not only cultural identity, it is also mental and physical health intersecting in my opinion.
