April was a positive month for online grocery sales, which rose broadly last month. Additionally in correlation with the uptick, pickup orders represented approximately 43% of the U.S. online grocery sector, delivery claimed about 38% of sales while ship-to-home accounted for just over 18% of the market in April. Total grocery e-commerce sales are projected to reach nearly $120 billion annually by the end of 2028, accounting for 12.7% of total grocery sales in the U.S., the report found. Pickup is expected to lead the pack as the most popular e-commerce method. Brick Meets Click Partner David Bishop credits a maturing e-commerce market and inflation’s slowdown as the greatest factors impacting the grocery e-commerce forecast.

Grocery e-commerce sales totaled $8 billion in March, about the same as their level during the same period a year ago, according to figures published Wednesday by Brick Meets Click and Mercatus. Pickup garnered approximately 43% of online grocery sales last month, delivery accounted for 39% of the market and ship-to-home claimed an 18% share. Overall grocery sales in the U.S. are forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.6% through 2028, according to the new U.S. eGrocery Sales Forecast from Brick Meets Click. Back in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic was just starting its global shakeup, the U.S. #grocery industry transformed seemingly overnight. Suddenly, legions of consumers who’d never before bought groceries online began forgoing store visits in favor of curbside pickup or at-home delivery. Brick-and-mortar #retailers scrambled to keep up with demand, often building up their click-and-collect and delivery infrastructures on the fly. At the time, many analysts predicted a good shake of shoppers would stick with grocery e-commerce long after the pandemic ended. They theorized that consumers who had experienced easy, timesaving, online ordering would have little incentive to resume in-store shopping.
