This conflict is much like the US Civil War or WWI with regards to the evolution of warfare and weapons. Small UAVs are like the tank in this regard; just finding their footing. Whoever masters this technology will dominate the next generation of warfare.
Russians are claiming that Ukraine has developed an electronic fuse using a LiDAR rangefinder. In theory, this would allow for precision airbursts of drone-dropped munitions, as the LiDAR would target a surface with a laser and measures the time for reflected light to return to the receiver. 🤔 The growing affordability within sensor technology as a whole will have a bigger impact on tomorrow's battlefield than most people realize. Today's Sentinel-2/LiDAR mashup... Taranaki Maunga (Mount Taranaki), Egmont National Park, New Zealand. I had to do a double take when I saw this imagery, not only is the volcano striking but the park boundary is even more striking, a clear delineation between the natural and human activity. There is a significant amount of open source lidar data for New Zealand and Egmont National Park was one of those areas of coverage. Taranaki Maunga is a dormant stratovolcano in the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. At 2,518 metres (8,261 ft), it is the second highest mountain in the North Island, after Mount Ruapehu which is about 130 kilometres east of Taranaki Maunga. Side note: Mount Ruapehu is in Tongariro National Park and 15 kilometres north of Mount Ruapehu is Mount Ngauruhoe which appeared as Mount Doom in Mordor and home to Dark Lord Sauron in the Lord of the Rings, unfortunately there is no lidar data for this park otherwise Mount Doom would be next on my list!
