The role of cities in transforming agrifood systems is crucial. As highlighted during yesterday's session organized by ICLEI, FAO, and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), cities have the ability to drive sustainable change through inclusive, multi-stakeholder governance. The complexity of cities should be leveraged for collective action, inspiring both local and national efforts, as emphasized by Zhimin Wu, Director of FAO Forest Division. Strengthening short supply chains and partnering with food banks are key to improving food security and reducing waste, as noted by Jacques Kossowski, Mayor of Courbevoie since 1995, and former French member of Parliament for 20 years. Building synergies between food system stakeholders and scaling locally owned, inclusive governance models are vital strategies, as stressed by Grace Gaziya and Abel Dabula, Head of Programs for GAIN Mozambique. Additionally, Lilian Rahal's insights from #Brazil show that intersectoral collaboration is essential in addressing food insecurity and ensuring access to healthy, locally sourced food. Cities are at the forefront of agrifood systems transformation, bringing diverse actors together to create sustainable, long-term solutions. Let’s continue to foster collaboration and innovation in our urban food systems, ensuring that every community has access to healthy and nutritious food for all. https://lnkd.in/dPDW-i2y

Innovating Switzerland’s Food Systems: Lessons from China and the Netherlands Switzerland imports nearly half of its vegetables, with much of the produce travelling thousands of kilometres before reaching the Swiss plates. This not only contributes to significant carbon emissions but also compromises the freshness of food. In an era where sustainability is crucial, should our food be more well-traveled than we are? Looking abroad, China and the Netherlands offer #inspiring models for transforming food transportation and production systems. China is pioneering vertical farming on an unprecedented scale, utilising advanced technologies to grow crops in urban settings. Their efforts in reforesting deserts and massive infrastructure development showcase a commitment to sustainable growth and food security. These initiatives have significantly reduced the distance food travels from farm to table, reducing carbon emissions and delivery times. Similarly, despite its limited land area, the Netherlands has become a global leader in high-efficiency agriculture. Dutch farmers have maximised yields while minimising resource use through innovative techniques like hydroponics and controlled-environment agriculture. Their success demonstrates that a nation doesn’t need vast expanses of land to thrive agriculturally—it requires innovation and a willingness to adopt new #technologies. With abundant #water resources and technological expertise, Switzerland is uniquely positioned to adopt and adapt these innovations. By investing in #vertical #farming and sustainable agricultural practices, Switzerland can reduce its reliance on imported produce and decrease the environmental impact of long-distance food transportation. Enhancing local production would also alleviate pressure on delivery services and improve food freshness and security. By learning from China’s technological advancements and the Netherlands’ efficient farming methods, Switzerland has the opportunity to revolutionise its food system. Investing in local, innovative #agriculture promotes sustainability and stimulates #economic growth and wealth generation. The future of Switzerland’s food transportation and delivery services is local, sustainable, and transformative—it’s time to cultivate that potential.

On #WorldFoodDay, the Netherlands reaffirms its commitment to ensuring food security globally through innovative and sustainable practices. This year’s theme, The Right to Food, highlights the pressing need for everyone to have access to nutritious food. As global challenges grow, food security is more important than ever. In #WestAfrica, the Netherlands is working with local partners to boost horticultural development and promote agroecological solutions. In Côte d'Ivoire, the HortiNord project focuses on empowering young ‘hortipreneurs’ by providing training in sustainable greenhouse farming and modern agricultural techniques. This programme is transforming horticulture and creating opportunities for future generations. Meanwhile in #Senegal, the HortiCôte programme addresses food sovereignty by supporting vegetable production through sustainable, climate-resilient practices. By partnering with Dutch businesses, we’re fostering innovation and collaboration to ensure a stable food supply, while also creating jobs and promoting youth entrepreneurship. Together, through initiatives like these, we can build a world where everyone has the right to healthy, sustainable food. In 2021, American University and 15 partner institutions across the U. S. launched the Multiscale RECIPES Research Network with the goal of transforming our wasted food system into a sustainable and resilient one. Food loss and waste is a complex problem spanning societal issues such as food insecurity and food recovery, sustainable farming, food packaging and transportation, food marketing, sales and consumer preferences, family dynamics, and corporate profits, among others. A fascinating part of the RECIPES Network vision is a purposeful focus on convergence, making the research process more effective and creative in designing solutions to big problems such as these. In a recent article in the journal Ecology and Society, team members evaluated how well the network's intentional convergence efforts have worked thus far.
