🌳 Could tiny forests the size of a tennis court play a big role in tackling the nature and climate crises? 🏞 The nature restoration space seems to be full of headlines about 'huge new projects, 'landscape scale recovery', 'millions of hectares of conservation'.... 🏙 And of course this is important in the huge fight against biodiversity loss, but it doesn't solve the problem of a lack of nature in our cities or the problem of a growing disconnect with the wild. 💡 This is where SUGi comes in. The company founded by Elise Van Middelem that has created nearly 200 tiny forests in 60 countries in just a few years. 🇯🇵 Tiny forests are created using a method pioneered over 50 years ago by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. These dense plantations of native species are not only pockets of biodiversity in an urban landscape, but they also offer climate resilience and a much-needed reconnection to nature for the local community. The terms "tiny forests", "pocket forests", "micro forests", "mini forests", "teeny tiny forests" (my personal favourite🤗) are often used interchangeably to refer to small, dense plantings, typically planted using the Miyawaki methodology. What's your personal favourite? 🌱🌿🌳 #urbangreening #miyawakiforest #tinyforest #plantmoretrees #urbanforest

🌏 Today is #EarthDay2024, but there isn't much to celebrate. 🌿 Humanity is currently facing an unprecedented environmental crisis. Today, we want to stress the importance of restoring wilderness areas worldwide. Invasive alien species are spreading, posing a threat to #biodiversity. Our Service Centre Director, Prof. Alberto Basset, would like to remind us all of this critical issue 👇 🗣️ Humans consume 30% of the planet's resources, which endangers other species. We must take responsibility and manage our natural environment urgently to prevent extinction. Beyond the ethical value of biodiversity, we need to avoid further destruction and rebuild and preserve ecosystems. Today, we call for awareness, not celebration. Let's learn why we need to conserve and manage biodiversity with this podcast episode ➡️ https://bit.ly/3uJRcWY And if you're looking for a glimpse of how human activities are threatening biodiversity, watch the trailer of our reportage we made in Iceland for the MarineSABRES project 👇

As attention turns to Colombia and the opening of COP16, instead of FOMO5, we are revisiting an episode of our podcast, Sandbox, that looks at biodiversity in the built environment. How can we bring back more parks, green space and wildlife to our UK cities and urban areas? Find out more in our ‘Sandbox’ episode: 'Urban Wonderlands: Grey or Green?' - Biodiversity and its positive effects on our wellbeing. The episode features Buro Happold experts Colin Byrne and Aaron Grainger, special guest Tamsin Westhorpe, and our regular host Andy Duncan. With nature in global decline, it is imperative that all industries take collective action to preserve biodiversity, particularly in urban areas. Our panel explores the importance of the recent Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) regulation, and how it can be applied throughout urban areas and across the UK. Aaron Grainger, associate director, UK ecology and biodiversity management, Buro Happold, said: “Now, we need to assess a site and it is then assigned a numerical value based on lots of different parameters. You then look at what a development is going to provide in terms of biodiversity, which again is assigned a numerical parameter. And then you compare the two and the policy requires developers to leave nature in a 10 percent better state than before.” Find the full episode on all the usual platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. 💫 I’m excited to be speaking at Hello Tomorrow’s Global Summit in Paris on 22nd March where I’ll be moderating a discussion with three fantastic experts in biodiversity restoration. With extensive knowledge of land and sea restoration, Nicolas Pade Laurie Menoud and Axelle Ducos will speak to the most pertinent questions facing nature right now. Together, we will discuss: 🌳 The challenges to scaling and financing nature-based solutions; 📡 The important role of #naturetech in supporting biodiversity restoration; 📲 How Indigenous People and local communities are using nature tech to support their existing ecosystem conservation work; and 🌍 Much, much more! Nature tech is a term used to capture all the diverse technological innovations that can accelerate and scale the implementation and finance of high-quality nature-based solutions, and it’s for this reason that I think it’s an important part of climate and nature action. Especially as it addresses a range of environmental challenges including habitat destruction, deforestation, soil degradation, water pollution, and species loss. It also facilitates the implementation and growth of solutions in food and agriculture, land and forests, oceans, water conservation management, biodiversity restoration, MRV, biodiversity credits, and green supply chains. Let me know if you’ll be at Hello Tomorrow’s Global Summit -– it would be great to meet up. https://lnkd.in/digWwPwD #GlobalSummit #HelloTomorrow

🌿 Celebrating International Day for Biological Diversity! 🌍 Today, on May 22nd, we join the global community in celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity. Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet, essential for the health of ecosystems and human well-being alike. It supports everything, from the air we breathe to the water we drink and the food we eat. Our planet's incredible variety of species and ecosystems is vital for resilience against climate change and environmental challenges. Let's take this opportunity to spotlight one of the major threats to biodiversity and raise awareness. The Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services highlights the alarming rate of biodiversity loss, driven by climate change, invasive species, over-exploitation of resources, pollution, and urbanization. Human activities are responsible for 75% of the decline in terrestrial ecosystems. Despite these challenges, the data shows that hope exists, indicating that solutions are within reach and it is not too late to act. Days like this provide us the chance to reflect and take action. Share your thoughts or actions you are taking to protect biodiversity. Together, we can make a difference! #BiodiversityDay #Sustainability #ClimateAction #InternationalDayForBiologicalDiversity #GlobalAssessmentReport #EcosystemServices #CEBIMAT

Today is International Day of Biodiversity 🌸🌱🐝 Imagine Earth as a vibrant orchestra. Every species, from the towering redwoods to the tiniest beetles, plays a unique note, contributing to the rich symphony of life. This biodiversity isn't just beautiful background music; it's the very foundation of a healthy planet, providing us with clean air, fresh water, and the food on our plates. But the music is under threat. Habitat loss, pollution, and climate change are silencing instruments at an alarming rate, necessitating global action for biodiversity conservation. One of the main takeaways was the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which refers to a new action plan aimed at halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030. An ambitious goal that the Netherland is keen to achieve. The framework sets specific targets for protecting land and water, reducing pollution, and mobilising resources for conservations efforts. International Day of Biological Diversity. Nature - biodiversity and all the species richness that we depend on - and the earth system functions that nature provides, is in rapid decline. Nature’s capacity to support human life - by providing well functioning carbon and hydrological cycles that stabilize our climate and provide us with water to drink; with pollination to grow our food and fresh air to breathe, for example - is at breaking point. Without dedicated effort, financing and multilateral support, we will not meet our climate targets and not stop biodiversity decline. Simply, we will not be able to continue nurturing human life. Today’s International Day for Biodiversity is a perfect opportunity to keep momentum going in order to protect and restore nature, to prosper with nature, to share benefits fairly, and to invest and collaborate for nature. Find out more about what we do and how we do it at Green Generation Initiative and be part of this movement, you can join us, support us and be a part of this.
