HP Hood LLC is recalling five varieties of 96 oz containers of LACTAID Milk due to the potential presence of undeclared trace amounts of almond. Individuals with allergies or severe sensitivities to almonds may face serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. This recall is critical for consumer safety, particularly for those with almond allergies. However, I wonder if there might be more effective ways to handle contamination issues, especially when the product is still safe for most consumers. Could alternative solutions, such as redirecting the product to those without allergies, help prevent waste while maintaining consumer safety? It raises questions about how we balance safety, waste reduction, and responsible resource management. What are your thoughts? https://lnkd.in/eFKBUreK

The listing of allergens when they are present in a product? The FDA has ordered Bimbo Bakeries to stop listing allergens that aren't present in their products. The FDA states that Bimbo Bakeries, which includes brands such as Sara Lee, Oroweat, Thomas’, Entenmann’s and Ball Park buns and rolls, has included known allergens such as sesame, walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts in their 'Contains' ingredients list -- even though "those ingredients were not included in the product formulations," Why? To cover themselves 'just in case'? Labelleling like this is excluding those with allergies for no real reason. #allergyawareness #foodallergy #foodlabelling #allergydietitian https://lnkd.in/ewVxmHJm

‘Origin Kitchen recalled all Spread & Stir and Bessert products due to the presence of peanuts that were not listed on the label.’ This poses potential physical harm for individuals with peanut allergies. Product recalls caused by inaccurate labelling for pre-packers could have been easily avoided at an early stage if an effective automated coding solution had been implemented. With Harford autocoding, at the start of each production run, the system ensures that in-line barcode scanners are configured to verify the correct packaging materials and labels for each individual product, case, or pallet. This process ensures 100% verification of packaging accuracy, thereby preventing inaccurate label information and unnecessary wastage. While global market demand for gluten-free food products is increasing, undeclared and mislabelled allergens, (including gluten) throughout the supply chain continue to be the number one cause of consumer product recalls. This is of major concern since the number of individuals affected by life-threatening allergies is on the rise. Testing can be used to confirm the allergen status of raw materials at receipt, to verify cleaning processes, and to evaluate finished products. Earlier this week we launched our May Contain campaign about the need to make ‘may contain’ labelling on food packaging mandatory! (remember, ‘may contain’ warnings aren’t required by law). We wanted to put this to the test and headed to the free from section to find a product that stated ‘may contain peanuts’. We sampled and tested this product using a swab test which is designed to pick up 1ppm (part per million) of peanut in a product. The product that we tested did in fact contain traces of peanut. This product was chosen at random from the free-from section and tested in it’s original, never-opened packaging for us to test. This shows that “May Contain” labels are critical because of the life-threatening implications of consuming undeclared allergens. As we mentioned yesterday, our campaign isn’t about telling you whether to consume these products, but about ensuring clearer communication between manufacturers and consumers through stricter regulations. How do we know how much of that allergen is present? Enough for someone to take the risk and not have an allergic reaction or does it have enough to provoke an anaphylactic reaction? May contains have a constant question mark by them, there is no certainty. We would like to see free from aisles adopting a top 14 allergen free section within it. This will allow the free form aisle to be more inclusive and remove as many may contain warnings as possible, making the free from more accessible to all. #allergies #foodallergies #peanuts
