India's current diet and nutrition scenario - A significant proportion of children suffer an impaired nutritional status. Concurrently, there is a rising prevalence of overweight and obesity in several states, creating a dual burden of malnutrition where both under-nutrition and overweight/obesity co-exist within the same communities and even within households. Estimates show that 56.4% of total disease burden in India is due to unhealthy diets. Healthy diets and physical activity can reduce a substantial proportion of coronary heart disease and hypertension and prevent up to 80% of Type 2 diabetes. A significant proportion of premature deaths can be averted by following a healthy lifestyle. A substantial number of children, exhibit early indications of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and its related risk factors like diabetes and hypertension. The upsurge in the consumption of highly processed foods laden with sugars and fats, coupled with reduced physical activity and the limited access to diverse foods, exacerbate micro-nutrient deficiencies and the overweight/obesity problems. Observing these concerning issues, the National Institute of Nutrition (under ICMR) has issued updated dietary and health guidelines for the Indian population; with the aim to provide Indians with the knowledge needed for optimal nutrition. Please join us in forthcoming discussions online and share your thoughts as we examine key points from each of the guidelines and share any additional resources for the community to learn from... #TogetherWeCan #BuildNutritionLiteracy #NourishTheNation Dr. Raj Bhandari | Dr.Rupal Dalal | Pawan Agarwal | Dr. Antaryami Dash | Dr.Devika G. | Dr. Pawankumar Patil

Can plant-based Indian diets shape heart health trends? Experts say so: “Research has linked disturbances in gut bacteria to conditions such as high blood pressure, lower levels of ‘good’ cholesterol, and a greater risk of heart disease and heart failure. A significant factor is trimethylamine (TMA), a byproduct generated when bacteria in the gut process choline-rich foods like red meat, poultry, and eggs. In the liver, TMA is converted into TMAO (trimethylamine-N-oxide), a compound that can increase cholesterol levels and contribute to arterial plaque, thus elevating the risk of heart attacks and strokes,” explains Dr. Girish Krishnamurthy, Consultant Physician & Cardiologist, Ramakrishna Hospital Jayanagar, Bengaluru. Recent research by a team led by Dr. Yohannes Melaku, Flinders University, Adelaide, provides more insight into what we already know: a healthy diet can reduce the likelihood of long-term chronic diseases. In this study they focused on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a highly prevalent and known pre-cursor of a range of serious health issues. Knowing that obesity is a major factor in OSA causation, most dietary intervention studies to date have emphasized weight reduction focusing on low calorific intake rather than examining alternative dietary patterns. The team analyzed data from over 14,000 subjects from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHMES). After making allowances for several influencing factors, they found that one class of diet can cut the risk of OSA by about a fifth. Further, such a diet has a greater impact on women over men. The most beneficial diet is designated as hPDI (high plant-based) which consists mainly of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and nuts. The study was unable to differentiate between the four known causal phenotypes for sleep apnea. Thus, it is not known whether the recommended dietary changes would provide the same benefits to those exhibiting high loop gain or low arousal index where obesity is less of a compounding factor. The full detailed text, just released on-line by the European Respiratory Journal, can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/3I8fkGj . Although exactly how these dietary changes work to alleviate OSA are not known, the authors make some interesting conjectures. Nevertheless, a good healthy diet should be high on the list for everyone. #osa #diet #healthydiet #snoring #obesity.
