Food systems transformation in Zimbabwe: Effectiveness of participatory monitoring and evaluation The usefulness of participatory monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) in food systems transformation in Africa remains poorly explored. JOSEPH TINARWO, VAIN JARBANDHAN and AARAM GWIZA explain how PM&E is designed to measure programme effectiveness and is geared towards promoting programme ownership, empowering beneficiaries, enhancing transparency and accountability, and improving the projects and programmes. However, they caution that the effectiveness of PM&E in food system transformation requires adequate budgetary support, rolling capacity-building initiatives, multistakeholder partnerships, policy integration, and indigenous knowledge-sharing and learning practices. This year is shaping up to be an exciting and transformative one for the agri-food sector. With the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) leading the charge on the '4 betters' approach—focusing on sustainable production, health, environmental stewardship, and holistic living—we at the World Food Forum Ghana are inspired to bring these principles to life right here in Ghana. Our mission is to bridge the gap from grassroots initiatives to national impact through the institutionalization of Regional Focal Persons for all the sixteen regions of Ghana. These focal persons will take up this initiative right from the community, district, and regional levels. Agri-food systems encompass everything from our food environments and supply chains to consumer choices. All these elements are interconnected through the '4 betters' framework, which emphasizes the resilience of our food systems as a powerful strategy against food insecurity in our country. This year, we are committed to advancing the agri-food systems agenda by forging strong partnerships with both the private and public sectors. Together, we can turn this vision into reality and create a brighter future for Ghana. World Food Forum FAO

Today, #Uganda has embarked on a journey towards #strengthening the #competitiveness of #exportoriented #staplefood #valuechains in East Africa. This initiative funded by USAID through TradeMark Africa will not only stimulate economic growth but also enhance #foodsafety in the region. Aligned with EAGC vision to be the #leadingvoice for the #grainindustry in Africa; the project’s aim to increase access to export-oriented markets, empower smallholder farmers with skills and resources, enhance SME firms' export capabilities, and foster collaboration to improve the policy environment. Africa loses more than #USD577Million to #aflatoxin as established in the 2023 study on impact of aflatoxin funded by the USAID Feed the Future program. Compliance with standards and food safety regulations by value chain players is a persistent problem due to awareness gaps, high compliance costs, inadequate enforcement by state regulatory agencies and limited business incentives to comply with standards. The project will focus on training and #capacitybuilding on #StandardsQualityManagement (SQM), #GoodStoragePractices as well as effective monitoring, tracking and #aflatoxinmanagement #MarketAccess #EconomicProsperity #RegionalIntegration

This year, we are partnering with Sahel Consulting on the 2024 Sahel Food Systems Changemakers Conference, themed: "Innovative Governance Models: A Pathway to Food Security in Nigeria." At Mercy Corps, we strongly believe in the transformative power of partnerships and collective action. Through our interventions and programs, we have worked closely with communities to strengthen food systems. A prime example is the Feed the Future, Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity (RRA), which has played a pivotal role in enhancing resilience in vulnerable communities across Northeast Nigeria. By introducing innovative solutions to address food security and economic stability, RRA has supported smallholder farmers and local businesses with training, modern equipment, and expanded market access, leading to significant improvements in productivity, food availability, and household income. At the Food Systems Changemaker's Conference on October 24, 2024 holding at the Abuja Continental Hotel, we will showcase how initiatives like RRA’s capacity building and market development strategies have empowered local farmers and entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods. We aim to spark new partnerships and strategies that can be replicated to further strengthen food systems across Nigeria.
