For over a decade, foodwatch has been at the forefront of campaigning against the presence of harmful mineral oil substances (MOSH and MOAH) in our food. These substances are not only pervasive in our food chain but also pose significant health risks, with MOAH even linked to cancer. 🔍 Our relentless efforts and extensive testing have finally borne fruit. The European Commission has drafted new regulations to limit these contaminants, with a final decision expected by the summer of 2024. This regulation requires approval from both the committee of experts from the 27 Member States and the European Parliament. 👏 Thanks to the support of close to 100,000 citizens real change is within reach. Yet, the journey is not over. We must continue to advocate for strict, uncompromised consumer protection standards without exceptions or extended transition periods. 💪 Join us in this final push by signing our petition to ensure that no detectable MOAH remains in any food within the EU. Let's make food safety a non-negotiable standard! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d6uRTMX6 #FoodSafety #ConsumerProtection #EURegulations #foodwatch #MineralOilFree

FDA looks to check up on food chemicals, but where’s the money? State bans and consumer uproar have pressured the FDA to review the safety of numerous chemicals already in the food supply. The agency now has a plan to step up oversight but warns it lacks the resources to carry it out. It’s time to remove harmful food additives from our food system. The FDA has finally acknowledged the need to review dangerous chemicals in our food supply, but they claim there’s not enough money to act. Meanwhile, states and consumers are sounding the alarm, demanding safer food. Our health can’t wait for funding to catch up. The food industry is too important to be left unchecked. We deserve transparency and food that nourishes, not harms. Let's push for meaningful change—our food system and health depend on it. #sustainability #foodsystems #foodadditives #healthandwellness #healthandwellbeing #FoodSafety #CleanFood #HealthMatters #BanHarmfulAdditives https://lnkd.in/e5jCFcpd

🥗PFAS in Food: Why Stronger Regulations Are Essential PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated substances) are chemicals linked to serious health issues like cancer and diabetes. These persistent substances are found in food and drink, raising urgent regulatory concerns. PFAS contamination can occur through packaging materials, food processing equipment, and environmental exposure. Studies show higher PFAS levels in restaurant foods compared to homemade ones, and contaminated water and sewage sludge contribute to food chain contamination. With around 15,000 PFAS compounds, detecting and quantifying these substances remains challenging. Advances in analytical techniques are improving detection but more comprehensive data is needed. Inconsistent regulations and gaps in coverage complicate food safety efforts, for example, some regions, including the EU and US, have set limits for PFAS in water and high-risk foods like seafood and dairy, but global standards vary. These differing thresholds and incomplete guidelines, pose challenges for food producers and consumers alike. A unified, risk-based global approach is essential for clear, effective regulations to ensure food safety. The need for stronger, consistent regulations is crucial for protecting public health and ensuring a safer food supply. Collaborative efforts and advances in detection methods are key to addressing this pressing issue. A dairy brand from Italy is currently under investigation for alleged milk adulteration. The authorities have seized 200 tons of milk. According to the accusations, milk was treated with sodium hydroxide and oxygenated water. The treatment aimed to make milk edible again after it was spoiled, likely due to incorrect practices in storage and production. Precautionary recalls have been initiated. The European Union (EU) regulations hold Food Business Operators (FBOs) responsible for product safety. Thus, ensuring food safety at every production stage is imperative. Recent actions taken by food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore highlight the importance of stringent food safety standards. Four Indian-manufactured spice mixes from popular brands MDH and Everest have been banned due to the presence of ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen, beyond permissible limits. The Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong and the Singapore Food Agency have both ordered recalls and emphasized the serious health risks posed by this pesticide. Ethylene oxide, primarily used for fumigating agricultural products, has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. This underscores the critical need for continuous monitoring and enforcement of food safety regulations to protect consumers worldwide. 📢 Some interesting and worrying news! 🙁 The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is voicing concerns about plant-based protein ingredients containing high levels of acrylamide, a potentially neurotoxic and carcinogenic chemical 🔬. EFSA is concerned that many plant-based protein ingredients may contain worrying levels of acrylamide released during processing, an increasing danger for consumers with high intakes, like vegetarians or vegans. SAFE is advocating for lowering the legal maximum levels of #acrylamide throughout the EU and is actively involved in a campaign to raise awareness with our member Chiara Manzi. Consumers' safety is our priority. 🛡️ https://lnkd.in/dKJnAEGt EU Health and Food Safety European Greens The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament Christophe Clergeau Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) EPP Group in the European Parliament

Singapore's Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) and Singapore Food Agency (SFA) recently closed a public consultation on a draft Food Safety and Security Bill (FSSB). Public comments and SFA's responses are awaited. This bill proposes a new category, "Defined Food," specifically designed to address regulations around alternative proteins and other novel food sources. Singapore, in fact, leads the world on novel food regulations, and other APAC countries are following suit. By creating this new category, Singapore is not only fostering innovation but also ensuring consumer safety through appropriate regulations. https://lnkd.in/gHsFaqux) #regulations #singapore #novelfoods #insectprotein #GMOs #altprotein #SFA
