𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗼-𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘅 𝗙𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱, Stadt Ulm, 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 🌱 The bridge in Ulm is the first of its kind globally, crafted entirely from flax fibers reinforced with bio-based unsaturated polyester, capable of handling traffic loads, including maintenance vehicles. Spanning the "Kleine Blau" river and connecting the "Lautenberg" road to a park, this bridge is equipped with smart sensors that monitor the construction's behavior in real-time. This project is part of the Interreg Europe NWE project: Smart Circular Bridge, with the municipality of Stadt Ulm playing a crucial role. Choosing this category highlights the groundbreaking application of bio-based materials in a functional traffic bridge, contributing to the circular economy and sustainable infrastructure 🌍. ✨ This project introduces two significant innovations: the scaling up of bio-composites to full-fledged traffic bridges and the use of an economically attractive and sustainable unsaturated polyester resin. This unique combination positions the bridge as a pioneer in the application of bio-based materials in infrastructure. The bridge offers a sustainable and high-quality alternative to existing glass fiber bridges. The use of natural fibers and smart technologies not only provides financial benefits but also enhances quality and craftsmanship within the construction sector. Furthermore, the bridge contributes to the development of sustainable infrastructure and strengthens the market position of bio-based materials. https://lnkd.in/dUanuXBw The film is made by our partner Proesler Kommunikation Engineering en production: Eindhoven University of Technology, Witteveen+Bos, Delft Infra Composites B.V. Shout out to Nicholas Callegari, founder of EIC client VeruStruct, for catching Mayor Elicker’s attention at ClimateHaven’s press conference last week! Nick left his engineering role with SpaceX to attend Yale School of Management and form VeruStruct (formerly Impact3D), a public benefit corporation with a mission to tackle housing insecurity driven by soaring housing costs and the environmental impacts of current construction methods. VeruStruct is developing a 3D printer that uses sustainable materials to print the structural walls for affordable housing at a fraction of the cost of traditional construction methods. It’s first pilot site: New Haven! VeruStruct is just one of the many pioneering ventures that the EIC has supported over the years dedicated to creating innovative solutions to the social, environmental, and economic challenges of a warming planet. We take immense pride in our commitment to helping these ventures in their fight against climate change.
