My colleague Rik Korenhof demonstrates an excellent example of how Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) can help industries adapt to the energy transition. This technology is particularly crucial for Blue Hydrogen production. In this process, methane is not combusted but rather undergoes steam methane reforming (SMR). Hydrogen is separated from carbon using high-purity water at elevated temperatures (700-1000°C) and pressures (3-25 bar). The resulting gas stream contains a significantly higher concentration of CO2 compared to that produced by direct methane combustion. This higher concentration makes carbon capture more efficient and economically viable. The primary reaction in SMR can be represented as: CH4 + H2O → CO + 3H2 Followed by the water-gas shift reaction: CO + H2O → CO2 + H2 The concentrated CO2 stream can then be captured, utilized, or stored, thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint of hydrogen production.
